The 1999 Clinet is a historically pivotal vintage, since it was the year that Jean-Louis Laborde (Ronan’s father) acquired the estate. It has a lovely bouquet of ripe blackberry, mulberry, pain d’épices and black truffle aromas that feel quite cohesive and focused. The rugged, saline palate is mediumbodied and quite rustic compared to today’s offerings, linear in style and slightly chewy in terms of tannin. A slight monotony is highlighted by the superlative 2016 Clinet tasted alongside. Tasted from an ex-château bottle at the estate

The 2005 Tignanello is just beginning to enter the early part of its drinking window, although it clearly has enough stuffing to drink well for another 20 years, if not longer. Smoke, graphite, plums, earthiness, black cherries and spices take shape in the glass, but it is the wine pure power and intensity - both remarkable for a vintage that was considered light at the outset - that truly stand out. The style is dark, brooding and muscular, with notable density and tons of personality. The wildness of Sangiovese comes through loud and clear. Although not the most polished Tignanello, the 2005 is certainly not lacking in personality

The 1982 Léoville Poyferré continues to drink brilliantly at age 40 (and I have enjoyed three bottles this year), wafting from the glass with aromas of sweet cassis fruit mingled with notions of loamy soil, cigar wrapper, licorice, black truffle and pencil shavings. Full-bodied, broad and sumptuous, with a velvety attack that segues into a deep, fleshy core, it's generous and enveloping, with lively acids and fine, powdery tannins that still deliver a vestige of back-end grip. Today, this is a strong contender for the title of Saint-Julien's wine of the vintage, with Ducru-Beaucaillou and Léoville-Las Cases as its only plausible rivals.

From the commune of Tauxières and the 2017 vintage, Bollinger's new NV Brut Blanc de Noirs PN TX17 exhibits aromas of crisp pear, orange zest and wet stones mingled with subtle hints of warm bread and dried fruits. Medium to full-bodied, pillowy and fleshy, with tangy acids and impressive ripeness for the vintage, it concludes with an elegantly mordant finish. This doesn't strike me as a year built to make old bones, but it should nonetheless enjoy over a decade's evolution.

Quite reductive, along with energy in the colour, this should be exciting when the reduction blows off. Excellent tension, layers of fruit, the oak well harnessed, and adequate acidity. From 80 to 120 year old vines in En Champs, Combes du Dessus, and Aux Echezeaux. Thirteen barrels have been produced from just under a hectare. Denser purple, the nose is hidden because this is going to be a long-term winner, not a sprinter. Really stylish with a density of dark fruit, some black cherries. Tasted as an approximation to its eventual assemblage, and issuing 80% from Romaneche, 20% from Chenas, Desjourneys’s 2010 Moulin-a-Vent joins palpable tannin to a slightly austere stoniness; although concentrated, subtly tart and bitter dark berries are present in spades, along with smoked meats, all leading to a bright, vibrant finish in which the fresh fruit is set off against the wine’s stony, peaty backdrop and incisively tinged with berry seeds and black pepper. I shall wait to be convinced by its further evolution whether or not this harbors a bit more tannin than is ultimately in its interest. But I wouldn’t doubt that it will stay healthy for at least half a dozen years.

Purer on the nose than the 2013 Les Cras, showing a stronger fruit quality to its aromas of lemon drop, peach, apricot and spices. Distinctly less exotic in the mouth as well, with surprising acidity framing and lifting the penetrating citrus and stone fruit flavors. More sharply delineated and harmonious than the Les Cras, showing little sign of botrytis. Finishes tactile, gripping and very long, with a piquant suggestion of grapefruit.

The 2011 Pouilly-Fuisse Vignes Blanches has a slightly taciturn, tightly coiled fume nose that is well-defined but needs coaxing from the glass. The palate is brimming over with citrus peel, light apricot and peachy notes. This is one of Christophe and Sandrine’s finest 2011s: very suave and sophisticated with lingering shaved ginger and lemongrass notes on the finish. Superb.

Quite a full yellow with a rather oxidative nose. The apples are a little bit bruised, but the wine underneath delivers a vast weight of white fruit which extends beautifully to the back of the palate. Really lovely and much cleaner, with one of the longest finishes. But the oxidative element may worry. I shall break the rules and offer a range for the score, despite the wine being in bottle. The 2016 Toscana Sangiovese finds Gianfranco Soldera at his best. A complex, dynamic wine, the 2016 possesses explosive energy to match its electric personality. Macerated cherry, herbs, dried rose petals, cedar and wildflowers are some of the many notes that come alive in the glass. The wine’s deep, layered character and overall nuance are the stuff dreams are made of. Superb.

The 2020 Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots 1er Cru has a well-defined bouquet with black cherries, violet and raspberry fruit. It's elegant yet there is plenty of fruit that feels very…Suchots. The palate is medium-bodied, not weighty and less powerful than its peers, but I can admire its tension and finesse, a rarer commodity in this vintage vis-a-vis others. Black pepper is judiciously sprinkled over the finish. This is a very fine Vosne-Romanée. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Montecillo Vineyard went into new oak but light-toast, 600-liter barrels, not the barriques that had been used in previous vintages. Whether it's the change in élevage or the jump of five years in age difference, but this wine looks more herbal and fresher than the 2012, more like the 2011—which winemaker Ketan Mody prefers. It's medium to full-bodied, linear, elegant and even slightly austere. Give it a few years in the cellar.

The 2016 Caiarossa will be released in September. This wine is a blend of seven grapes—42% Cabernet Franc, 25% Merlot, 15.5% Syrah, 6% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Petit Verdot, 4.5% Sangiovese and 1% Alicante. This vintage sees a slightly higher percentage of Cabernet Franc than usual, but I am told that the 2018 edition will see more Syrah instead. The bouquet presents a beautiful first wave of dark fruit that pushes the limits of ripeness but remains safely within the realm of elegance. The aromas are balanced and focused with blackberry, cassis, and light touches of salty or rusty mineral. The wine is not too constructed or big in the mouth, rather is shows a delicate level of elegances that absolutely seals the deal. Some 57,000 bottles were made.

No more than 30 hl/ha after the passage of the hail storm, which also meant that Arnaud had to make careful choices, not necessarily his usual ones, in selecting grapes for whole bunch vinification, just 25-30% overall, with 25% new wood. Mid purple with an elegant bouquet more raspberry than strawberry. Definitely something of a savoury character behind, but the fruit continues all around the palate. Drink from 2028-2035. This derives from a parcel planted in 1984.

This is Alberto Graci's top-shelf wine. The 2013 Sicilia Quota 1000 Barbabecchi is a pure expression of Nerello Mascalese, with fruit sourced from one of Etna's highest vineyards up on the volcano's steep slopes. This wine opens to a mild garnet color and lean consistency. What it lacks in color saturation, it makes up for in terms of power and aromatic intensity. The wine's texture is lean and compact, but this wine does deliver beautifully in terms of long-lasting elegance and grace. This single-vineyard bottling from the Barbabecchi vineyard is labeled Sicily DOC instead of Etna DOC because the Etna appellation officially ends at 1,000 meters above sea level. These precious pre-phylloxera vines are planted just above that altitude. Only 1,600 bottles are made.

This beautifully balanced vintage is characterized by a tight inner core of fruit that underlines the graceful aging capacity of these wines. The 2016 is shaping up to be one destined for long cellar aging. Now in its youth, the wine offers wild berry, rose and licorice aromas.

From 30-year-old Savagnin vines on gray marl in Château-Chalon, this ouillé white ferments spontaneously in neutral oak and ages long on fine lees with regular topping up. Deep straw-gold, it opens with preserved lemon, green apple, crushed walnut and damp slate. Yellow plum, white pepper and salted citrus oil drive a dense, textured palate, cut by electric acidity and finishing long, dry and intensely saline.

Rich but taut, with peach, honey and a fine whole-cluster frame. Long, salty and savoury on the finish, with mineral spice, butter and discreet oak. Concentrated and focused.

Macvin du Jura is a regional speciality: an AOC-designated fortified wine, or vin de liqueur, made by combining unfermented grape juice with Marc. (Marc is grape pomace brandy, distilled from the leftover skins, pulp, seeds and stems after winemaking.) The result is richly textured, aromatic and naturally sweet.
This cuvée is two-thirds unfermented 2020 Chardonnay juice from vines over 65 years old, blended with one-third Marc from 2013. Only the finest juices and promace brandies are used. The blend then ages 60 months in 300L oak before bottling on 16 December 2025, at 18% vol. and 150 g/L residual sugar.
The colour is amber-gold. The nose suggests quince, dried apricot, bitter orange, honey and walnut, with a discreet thread of aged marc. The palate is rich and viscous, yet kept lively by freshness, and the finish is long and warming. Serve lightly chilled as an aperitif, with dark chocolate or Comté, or as a wine for quiet drinking. Contains sulfites.

This Extra Brut Champagne blends 60% Pinot Noir with 30% Chardonnay and 10% Pinot Blanc, about 80% from 2019 and the rest reserve wines from 2010 to 2018. Straw-gold with a fine bead, it offers red berries, ripe citrus and yellow fruit on the nose, then bread and toast. The palate is taut and saline, fresh through the middle, with a dry bitter flick that keeps you coming back.

The 2002 Brut Blanc de Blancs Comtes de Champagne is beginning to drink very well, wafting from the glass with a brilliant bouquet that mingles aromas of pear, citrus confit and dried fruits with notions of marzipan, brioche, oyster shell and smoke. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, broad and textural, with a layered and multidimensional core, considerable concentration and a long, penetrating finish. Racy and precise though the wine is, this is a somewhat broader, richer rendition of Comtes than the compelling 2008 that preceded it in this tasting, but it's hard to choose between the two in terms of quality.

The 1988 Calon Segur is a blend of 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc, 33% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot. Though I have tasted most vintages of this estate since 1982, this was in fact the first time to taste this particular vintage. It has a rustic, slightly ferrous bouquet, dominated by black fruit, copper piping, damp loam and undergrowth. You perceive a higher percentage of Cabernet Franc than actually exists in the blend, nonetheless it is a charming old school Saint-Estèphe bouquet. The palate is mediumbodied with melted tannin and a softer texture than I expected. There is quite a noticeable bell pepper component in situ, ferrous in style, earthy and what you might call “solid”. It fades a little towards the mushroom-tinged finish. Now at 30-years old, it is a wine that would show much better at the dinner table than on its own. Tasted at the château.

Tasted at the property, the 1985 Pichon Lalande is fully matured on the feral, tertiary nose, and like the bottle I tasted a couple of years ago, this has recently become much more diffuse than exemplary showing during the 1990s and 2000s. The palate is fleshy and smooth like many wines of this vintage, but in recent years, the tannins have become and little edgier, the fruit degraded and turning quite mushroom-like and earthy on the finish. I would broach bottles of this over the next five years, because I feel that it is drying out. Tasted March 2016.

The 2022 À Mi-Chemin is not a wine you should judge by its cover: initially, it seems very ripe, fruity and welcoming on the nose. But then it shows its true colors. This wine is the vinous equivalent of having a bucket of water thrown in your face while you're asleep. The tension and mineral flinty character are real wake-up calls for your palate. Its persistence and line are powerfully pushed across your palate. It has spice and momentum and holds you tight. The 2022 needs time. It was grown on a flint-rich parcel in the village of Saint-Satur, which sits below the hilltop town of Sancerre.

Mid to full purple with an interestingly complex nose, which has a certain but not exaggerated ripeness but then swings through several fruit profiles. Rich succulent fruit with significant charm, I like the way the tannins blend in, as Thibaut has indeed tried to vinify to accentuate the charm rather than the muscle. The 2002 Dom Perignon is at first intensely floral, with perfumed jasmine that dominates the bouquet. With time in the glass the wine gains richness as the flavors turn decidedly riper and almost tropical. Apricots, passion fruit and peaches emerge from this flashy, opulent Dom Perignon. The wine’s volume makes it approachable today, but readers in search of more complexity will want to cellar this for at least a few years to allow for some of the baby fat to drop off. Geoffroy describes the vintage as very ripe and adds that some of the Chardonnay showed the ill-effects of the hot growing season in the somewhat burned, dehydrated fruit that came in that year. This bottle was disgorged in July, 2009. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2032.

Born of a long yet cold and damp growing season that yielded many wines from grapes harvested at the threshold of ripeness, the 2007 Blanc de Blancs Comtes de Champagne is a considerable success and has evolved little since I last tasted it a few years ago. Disgorged in 2017 with a dosage of nine grams per liter, it reveals a bouquet of pear, mocha and dried flowers mingled with cacao nib, and there's a touch of smoky reduction that is more overt in this rendition than in the 2012–2014 trio. On the palate, it is medium-bodied, elegant and taut, with a crystalline core of fruit, pinpoint mousse, incisive acids and a precise, long, chalky finish. Less demonstrative than both the 2006 and 2012 editions, this is a middleweight, more lightly structured Comtes—one that may stir a certain nostalgia for the Comtes of bygone years.

I hesitated before offering another long note as purple as the wine it purports to describe, but from bottle, Desjourneys’s 2010 Fleurie La Chapelle des Bois Tres Vieilles Vignes has indeed well-exceeded even my exalted Issue 196 expectations, so I feel bound not just to offer an update, but one that reflects my awe. Almond extract, rowan, freesia, and dark berries and stone fruits shadowed by their distilled counterparts combine for a penetratingly high-toned and hauntingly complex aroma. The texture here has turned positively silky and this essence from centenarian vines finishes not just with the “pristine purity of fruit ... complex depth of flavor (and) vibratory intensity” on which I commented before it was bottled, but with a soaring sense of buoyancy and a kaleidoscopic interaction of floral, fruit, and mineral nuances. Although the track record for Duperray’s wines is short, I feel confident that one like this will remain awesome at least through 2020.

The 2004 Viña Tondonia Gran Reserva didn't stop growing and changing in the glass for the good three hours that lasted the tasting of the portfolio. I had tasted this wine on my previous visit (they don't usually open future Gran Reserva vintages), and I was very impressed. This was aromatic (but took some time in the glass to open up), floral, perfumed, elegant and nuanced. The year was excellent, textbook, and the grapes from Viña Tondonia were picked from the 11th of October, the dates from yesteryear. I had the exceptional 2001 Parreno two weeks before I tasted this wine, and I found many similarities between both wines. It has complex notes of forest floor, truffle, wild herbs, spices and mushrooms and a touch of iodine. This is velvety, with super elegant tannins and a supple finish. It has clout and persistence, but there's also something ethereal about it. It's full of energy, light and power. This should be almost eternal. Bravo! 24,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in November 2018.

The 2023 Riesling Sommerberg Grand Cru was made from around 50-yearold vines in the heart of the site. A yellow pear peel aroma combines with a touch of lemon zest on the nose. This is all understated and subtle, still swinging with a tiny touch of yeast. The granite's sleekness, tautness and directness are on full show on the palate despite its milder acidity. The finish is wonderfully juicy and dry. (Bone-dry)

The 2021 Dolinsek Ranch Heritage Wine is a wild, exotic wine. Black cherry, plum, licorice, menthol, spice, chocolate and lavender build as the 2021 shows off its ample, resonant personality. Small yields contribute to the wine's depth and layered feel. It's a great example of what this Russian River site is capable of.

"Les Quarts is the original plot that gave its name to the Quarts-de-Chaume appellation," reminds Ivan Massonnat, spiritus rector of Domaine Belargus. The Quarts-de-Chaume terroir—a sunny, south-facing hillside on schists, exposed to the morning mists of the Layon River and ventilated by constant winds—results in "a botrytis of rare concentration," says Massonnat, as the 2018 Quarts-de-Chaume Grand Cru Liquoreux Les Quarts demonstrates impressively. Amber-orange colored, the nose is deep, intense and concentrated, very complex and elegant, with spicy and balsamic apricot notes, nougat and porcini aromas as well as flinty-mineral notes and associations of crispy ham hock. Round, smooth and sweet but with great finesse and elegance, this is a rich yet almost weightless and perfectly balanced liquoreux from the central Les Quarts plot of the QDC appellation that develops a vertical, highly stimulating and filigreed structure that leads to a long, crisp and frisky piquancy and salty finesse that makes this grand cru wine extremely digestible, even at this very early stage. The 2004 Dom Pérignon is one of the more reductive, autolytic vintages of this wine to have been released in the last decade, offering up a toasty bouquet of pears, green apple, iodine, peach and smoke. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, satiny textured and fleshy, with a sweet core of fruit, a fine mousse and a vinous profile. The 2004 is drinking well today: as I wrote earlier this year, between the rich, ripe 2002 and the powerful but racy 2008, the 2004 is an excellent but more classically proportioned example of Dom Pérignon.

The consistency and depth of this wine is just incredible. Like the Carla 6, the 2016 Giorgio Primo shows an inky dark color, almost totally black, with penetrating fruit and long waves of rich fruit flavor throughout. George the First casts mesmerizing spells of spice, tar and smoke. This is a blend of 50% Merlot, 45% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Petit Verdot. This is another outstanding effort from Fattoria La Massa and its eccentric but visionary founder, Giampaolo Motta. Some 16,000 bottles, magnums, double magnums and other large formats were created.

While the corresponding La Chapelle des Bois appeared from cask to have had an edge on Duperray’s 2010 Fleurie Les Moriers Tres Vieilles Vignes, from bottle this dramatically different wine – which he describes as “the nose of Fleurie with the palate of Moulin-a-Vent” – is no less impressive than its immediate sibling. Deeply concentrated plum and cherry fruit are allied to iodine-tinged saline, sweet shrimp shell reduction intimated already in the nose and serving for saliva gland-milking in an amazingly thrusting, gripping finish. White pepper and musky rose radish tweak the nostrils and re-emerge as an invigorating adjunct that encourages me to imagine that a profoundly intense Gruner Veltliner Smaragd had been blended-in. Nutmeg and toasted pecan complement the intense ripeness of fruit, which however never turns superficially sweet thanks in large part to its sheer freshness and to the aforementioned biting invigoration. I would plan on following this at least through 2020.

I was very much looking forward to the 2004 Viña Tondonia Blanco Gran Reserva, the next vintage of this wine after the spectacular 2001. 2004 was a perfect climate year. This is a developed white that was matured in well-seasoned, neutral American oak barrels for 10 years in their old caves, where the wine gets pungent aromas of mushrooms, pollen, beeswax, white pepper, kerosene, cereals and something herbal (celery and even asparagus) that reminded me of the 1964. The palate is velvety and dry and super tasty, with a salty twist in the finish. It's still a baby even after years in bottle. This should age superbly in bottle. I think this is slightly better than the 2001, one of the freshest and most elegant vintages for this bottling. Bravo! 10,000 bottles were filled in November 2018. Before and after aging in barrel, the Gran Reserva wines also spend some time in oak vats.

The Castellare di Castellina 2016 I Sodi di S. Niccolò is 85% Sangioveto (otherwise known as Sangiovese) and 15% Malvasia Nera. I tasted number 9,949 out of 29,230 bottles filled in January 2020. This is a true beauty and a wine that makes a lasting impact. I came back to my opened bottle some 24 hours later, and the wine tasted even better. It shows enormous purity and focus, with specific aromas that remind you of its Tuscan origins. Those aromas are very Mediterranean in character with rosemary and crushed lavender, followed by wild cherry, dried raspberry and cassis. The tannins are elegant and finely integrated, and the wine leaves nothing but long, polished sensations behind. This is one of the best vintages of I Sodi di S. Niccolò I have encountered in 20 years.

The 2017 Bourgueil Clos Nouveau opens deep and concentrated on the pure, fresh and intense nose that exhibits spicy notes of blue and black berries. Silky, vital and enormously nervy on the fresh yet concentrated palate, this is an iodine and mineral Cabernet Franc with a tight structure that deserves special handling: aeration! I tasted the wine again after seven days, and it had certainly changed. The nose remained pure and elegant and revealed a deep, intense and complex bouquet with concentrated cherry and dark berry aromas along with iodine notes. Full-bodied, wide and generous on the palate yet firm and with a silky-elegant texture, this is a very intense and robust giant in the making that still needs years to show its true capacity. The finish is stimulating and intense. A spectacular wine, probably one of the greatest red wines from the Loire. Tasted in May 2021.

I absolutely adore this wine on every emotional and intellectual level. I can still taste it today, weeks after my first sampling. The Luciano Sandrone 2016 Barolo Le Vigne is a stirring and profound expression that pulls on your heartstrings. I found it to be unforgettable, quite literally, inspiring one of those celebrated "wow" moments that we wine lovers so desperately seek in bottle after bottle. Le Vigne is a clever blend of fruit from Baudana in Serralunga d'Alba (offering the power), Villero in Castiglione Falletto (shaping the precision), Vignane in Barolo (adding to the purity of the aromas) and Merli in Novello (that helps to flesh out the fruit). This intersection of various vineyards spanning the appellation creates a pyramid of perfection and beauty. The wine shows large construction, but that fruit weight is balanced against the vivid cherry, spice, aniseed and campfire ash that gently lift from the bouquet.

Extra Brut blends 66% Pinot Noir with 34% Chardonnay from 16 crus, 88% of which are classified as Grand Cru. The wine opens with a very clear, deep, rich and aromatic but also pure and mineral-fresh nose of crushed rocks, cherries, brioche, pain aux raisin, white nougat, chalk and ripe, yellow-fleshed fruits. Highly elegant and complex on the weightless yet persistent and salty palate, this is an intense, densely woven, firmly structured yet elegant, beautifully refined and refreshing "recent disgorgement" (February 2018) that reveals just a kiss of oxidative flavors that adds even more complexity. The 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin Petite Chapelle 1er Cru surpasses its showing from barrel. It has an appealing nose with red fruit and a touch of sandalwood, perhaps without quite the same vivacity as its peers, a bit laidback by comparison. There is some reduction here. The palate is mediumbodied with a smooth texture, black pepper and clove infusing the dark berry fruit. It's a little drier on the finish than its peers. Perhaps I would have dialed down the new oak a little, although it might merit a higher score if the fruit can assimilate the wood. Wait and see. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

Originating from a late September harvest and disgorged at the end of 2023 with a dosage of six grams per liter, Krug’s 1996 Brut Collection presents itself with a golden-yellow hue, offering up a rich bouquet of honeycomb, espresso roast and dried apricot mingled with quince and lemon oil, followed by a medium- to full-bodied palate that is layered and structured around a vintage-typical incisive spine of acidity. Though more civilized than is often the case in this vaunted vintage, it concludes with a saline, lemon-tinged finish. It represents an aromatically mature bottle that will delight lovers of older Champagne and serves its purpose by offering a wine of impeccable provenance; yet even if one might reasonably expect its evolution to have followed a somewhat different trajectory from that of the original release owing to its late disgorgement, there is little reason to defer opening it, as it is already drinking at great generosity.
Beginning with the 1976 vintage, Krug deliberately retained a portion of bottles for later release, an approach that became more systematic from the 1985 vintage onward.

Even more impressive and one of the top four to five wines in the vintage, the 2011 Cote Rotie Cote Brune (which was just bottled prior to my visit) has striking floral, white pepper, stem, game and liquid rock-like aromas and flavors. Seeing 100% whole cluster fermentation, this wild, perfumed and full-bodied rock star has brilliant mid-palate depth, ultra-fine tannin and blockbuster length on the finish. It tastes like the essence of Cote Rotie, and will evolve for 20-25 years or more.

The purity of the 2019 Pinot Noir Occidental Station Vineyard evokes the resonating tone of a tuning fork and offers the same satisfaction every time I open a bottle. The light-bodied palate is tremendously concentrated for its slender frame—vertical acidity and powdery tannins are knit into luxurious waves of spicy, floral fruit. A glowing fresh purple. Not reduction but just a mineral flinty top note above the fruit. Sitting back on its haunches but this lack of immediacy makes it even finer. The 2019 Chambolle-Musigny Les Bussières 1er Cru comes from 0.50-hectares of 50-year-old vines and includes 30% whole bunches and is aged in 20% new oak. It has a well defined bouquet with brambly red fruit, sage and light sousbois aromas. The palate is classic in style, fresh with chalky tannins, zippy acidity and a surprisingly strict finish that might be just going through a prenatal dumb phase. Afford it 3-5 years in bottle at least, because the long saline finish augurs a bright future

The 2019 Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru La Riotte opens in the glass with notes of cherries, sweet red berries, raw cocoa, spices and orange rind. Medium to full-bodied, velvety and sapid, with fine depth at the core and an immensely charming, open profile, it will offer a broad drinking window. Lignier observes that this site never suffers from hydric stress and came in at the highest alcohol level this year—that's to say, in the low 14s.

The 2024 Majuelos del Chiviritero comes from a 2.53-hectare plot at 750 meters above sea level. It was planted by Isaac Cantalapiedra and his father, Heliodoro, in 1981 on classical fluvial terraces of La Seca covered in boulders; and in 2024, they added some more plots of similar characteristics and age that were used before for Cantayano, so they made a slight adjustment of the name. They always get low yields here, so it's a wine with more concentration, depth and volume, with the energy and tension from the limestone. The juice from the direct pressing of the bunches fermented with all the sediments in used French oak barrels with indigenous yeasts for 15 to 20 days without temperature control and had full malolactic fermentation. The wine matured in French oak barrels for 11 months, followed by another seven months in stainless steel. 2024 was cooler than 2023, and the wines show more precision and are finer-boned. This is elegant and streamlined, more about the soil than the variety, tasty, with a salty twist in the finish. It has contained ripeness and 13.5% alcohol, with a pH of 3.26 and 6.63 grams of acidity. It grew in volume and quality; vintages are like that... There's finesse and elegance. It overdelivers for the price. 19,672 bottles and 180 magnums produced. It was bottled in February 2026.

The highlight in this range, the exquisite 2014 Tignanello is all about persistence and understated class. The aromatics alone are captivating. Sculpted, finely delineated flavors add to the wine's vivid personality. Because of the challenges posed by the growing season, the blend leans more heavily toward Cabernet Sauvignon than is typically the case. Above all else, though, the 2014 is all about harmony, and there is plenty of that here. Unfortunately, production is down 30%.

From a vintage I really love comes the Bibi Graetz 2021 Testamatta. This wine has dark fruit, cherry, powdered chocolate and chalky mineral. This vintage represents a turning point for this eccentric vintner who decided to change styles and focus on the red fruits and high notes. Nonetheless, this wine delivers good freshness and balance, and I like it better than the 2020 vintage that Bibi himself prefers. To me, the 2021 has more vertical freshness. This is a release of 120,000 bottles.

Chenin Blanc. The domaine’s oldest vines. A vineyard with quite a bit of limestone. 2023 was much warmer than 2024, according to Jean-Philippe Blot, to the extent that this parcel was harvested a month earlier in 2023.
Strong notes of hay and volatile acidity at first, then it opens up to quince paste, green apple and slight vegetal notes of turmeric and pumpkin. Very mineral and stony. Tightly wound. (JRL)

In contrast to the tension of À Mi-Chemin, this Sancerre grown on flint soils, the 2022 Pour Vous, is much more open and richly fruited. Hailing from vines over 50 years old with their feet in clay chalk soils, you can expect ripe apples, which verge on tarte tatin-like flavors. While there's richness and depth of concentration, it's all contained within a compact core. The finish is lingering, powerful and warmly spiced.

As I wrote earlier this year, the 1982 Léoville Las Cases is one of the least evolved wines of the vintage, and this impeccably conserved ex-château bottle was, if anything, even more youthful still. Retaining a saturated ruby-black hue at age 40, it unwinds in the glass with aromas of cassis and other dark fruits mingled with notions of pencil shavings and loamy soil. On the palate, it's full-bodied, broad-shouldered and muscular, with an ample core of fruit framed by voluminous, powdery tannins. Rich and concentrated, with an expansive, comparatively low-acid profile, it comes into its own with extended aeration—and with food.

Pierre Girardin was fortunate enough to purchase 3 ouvrees of Bâtard-Montrachet in late 2017, a plot with 85 year old vines. Rich yellow and very weighty. Spectacular! This is the vineyard that encouraged Pierre to go higher in canopy. A fabulous mix of complex yellow fruit, a little bit of orange blossom, but a greener thread too, showing that this has not gone through too far in ripeness. I tasted again the 2020 Savagnin Vigne Aux Dames because he didn't bottle the grapes from the vineyard in 2021 because yields were very low after the frost. Like it did last year when I first tasted it, the wine shows superbly; I'd say it's even better now. This had a long aging, four years in cask. Even in a slightly warmer year, this is only 12.5% alcohol, and it's serious, austere and highly mineral, energetic, vibrant and fresh, with a long, dry and salty finish. It's aging very slowly. Like last year, we also sampled the unbottled 2022 that took very long to ferment—took two years—but the slow process gives more complexity, and it's riper than 2020, super tasty, round and long, with a spicy twist, yuzu and white pepper. It's super fresh with a pH of 3.05, ripe but vibrant. This 2022 will age nicely.
