Very old vines in Aux Echanges, the earliest dating from 1921. Mid crimson ruby. A soft but appealing bouquet, fleshy red fruits, an excellent depth of fruit on the palate with sufficient acidity at the back, even a mineral touch. Well delineated and with a long aftertaste. Drink from 2029-2034. Tasted Dec 2024.

The 2021 Santenay Le Passetemps 1er Cru, cropped at just 20hl/ha, is much more closed on the nose compared to Vincent's other cuvées, which he told me is usual. The palate is well balanced with a little more flesh and substance, a dense 2021 with a pure blackberry, raspberry and black pepper-infused finish. This will require three to four years in bottle.

Made from vineyards first planted in 1887 and 1928, the 2021 Old Vine Series T Voetpad comes from the oldest, dry white wine vineyard in South Africa. Cerebral and delightfully waxy, it has freshness with sweet citrus tones that sway with aromas of raw honeycomb and dusty citrus blossom. Medium-bodied, the palate is energetic with plenty of life left in it and shows a delightful kiss of phenolic bitterness and soft tannic lift that makes this a silent juggernaut for food and wine pairings. Absolutely stellar!

Inky ruby. Intensely aromatic cherry and dark berry aromas are complemented by hints of licorice, peppery spices and cola. Deeply concentrated but taut dark fruit flavors show a suave blend of power and vivacity, and a mineral nuance adds lift. Gains heft and sweetness on the clinging finish, which features a smoky mineral quality and fine-grained tannins that come on slowly

Equal parts Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from this standout parcel, fermented with native yeasts and aged 11 months in oak. Disgorged October 2023 (just 1,600 bottles), it bursts with vibrant red apple, strawberry, wild berry, and star fruit notes laced with marzipan. Crisp, saline, and energetically dry, it delivers bright fruit and lively tension.

This elegant Pinot Noir hails from a top Jura terroir known for Chardonnay. Planted ungrafted in 2006 on red marl soils with limestone, it was aged in amphora to best express the site. Elegant and fragrant, it offers red fruit and floral aromas, silky texture, vibrant freshness, and fine complexity. Perfect with game birds.

Chardonnay from three parcels on clay-limestone soils, aged 20 months in 228L oak barrels. Unfiltered, unfined, with minimal SO2. Complex aromas of smoky salted orchard fruit, lemon curd, starfruit and dried pineapple. Medium-bodied, vibrant acidity cuts the buttery richness with almond hints and a long mineral finish. Ages beautifully.

The 2016 Caiarossa will be released in September. This wine is a blend of seven grapes—42% Cabernet Franc, 25% Merlot, 15.5% Syrah, 6% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Petit Verdot, 4.5% Sangiovese and 1% Alicante. This vintage sees a slightly higher percentage of Cabernet Franc than usual, but I am told that the 2018 edition will see more Syrah instead. The bouquet presents a beautiful first wave of dark fruit that pushes the limits of ripeness but remains safely within the realm of elegance. The aromas are balanced and focused with blackberry, cassis, and light touches of salty or rusty mineral. The wine is not too constructed or big in the mouth, rather is shows a delicate level of elegances that absolutely seals the deal. Some 57,000 bottles were made.

Massal selection vines planted at 14-15,000 per hectare on a mix of marl and clay-limestone. Mid lemon yellow. Again, the bouquet starts backward but only because of an excess of concentration. Linear intensity, a pure white fruit, growing in stature further back on the palate. A very light citrus wash, and amazing persistence. Drink from 2028-2035. Tasted Nov 2024.

I also had a very young bottle of the 2015 Vin Jaune, a selection of 62% Savagnin Jaune and 38% Savagnin Vert from different lieux-dits on Lias clay, Charrière, Billat, Cret ... planted between 1945 and 1979. It's a selection of the finest biological barrels, wines matured under a fine veil of flor yeasts for seven years. 2015 produced powerful wines. From the evaporation and concentration, this has 16% alcohol, but it has kept a very low pH, 3.01, denoting vibrant freshness; and even though the acidity is not very high (5.4 grams), the volatility (0.72 grams/liter) might have helped to lift up the wine. It has classical notes of rancid walnuts, curry, celery and dry yellow flowers. The palate is pungent and persistent, with a long and very tasty, almost salty finish. Umami! It was bottled in June 2023.

The 2018 Santenay Gravité is a blend of the oldest parcels (0.35-hectares) of low-yielding vines that suffer court-noué in two Premier and one Village Cru vineyards. It has a gentle nose that unfolds with aeration, pure blackberry, briary and crushed chalky aromas, becoming more and more floral in the glass. The palate is well balanced with crunchy black fruit, touches of tobacco and saline notes. Long with fine grip and structure on the finish. Excellent.

The Castellare di Castellina 2016 I Sodi di S. Niccolò is 85% Sangioveto (otherwise known as Sangiovese) and 15% Malvasia Nera. I tasted number 9,949 out of 29,230 bottles filled in January 2020. This is a true beauty and a wine that makes a lasting impact. I came back to my opened bottle some 24 hours later, and the wine tasted even better. It shows enormous purity and focus, with specific aromas that remind you of its Tuscan origins. Those aromas are very Mediterranean in character with rosemary and crushed lavender, followed by wild cherry, dried raspberry and cassis. The tannins are elegant and finely integrated, and the wine leaves nothing but long, polished sensations behind. This is one of the best vintages of I Sodi di S. Niccolò I have encountered in 20 years.

The 2017 Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs L’Avizoise Grand Cru has real breadth and resonance in the naturally softer style of the year. Dried pear, lemon peel, chamomile, white flowers, sage and dried herbs build effortlessly. As is the case across the lineup, the L’Avizoise is a bit lighter in volume than the most important vintages, but it is impeccably balanced. Sourced from 50+-year-old hillside vines in the estate’s oldest Grand Cru Parcels, Les Robarts and La Voie D’Épernay, this saw the same 600L tonneaux native yeast fermentation as with the other two micro-cuvées in the lineup (Minéral and Vénus). Dosage is 5 grams per liter. Disgorged: May, 2023.

Blackberry, cassis, and rhubarb; blond tobacco sandalwood, and nutmeg mingle alluringly in the nose and on the ripely-fruited yet firmly tannic and subtly yet insistently tart-edged palate of 2008 Grange des Peres red. Animal blood and maritime mineral elements emerge as well in a long, expansive, multi-faceted finish. There is considerable amplitude as well as tannic structure and palpable density here, and I expect that 2-3 years of enforced deprivation are in order before starting to chart the wine’s evolution in bottle over the subsequent 6-8.
