What is en primeur?

This is a French term for buying wines before they are bottled for future delivery. This practice is most associated with wines from Bordeaux though more and more regions are operating similar annual campaigns. One historical reason for buying en primeur is price, as wine producers used to rely on cash flow from en primeur purchases to keep their businesses running, and were ready to offer some of their wines at a lower price prior to bottling. This price advantage has disappeared to a certain extent, but there are other reasons to buy en primeur. One can guarantee the provenance of the wines purchased en primeur, and be able to specify bottle formats you prefer other than the standard 750ml bottles.
