Fulcro - High Scoring New Wave Albariño Introductory Offer

Fulcro is, for me, the most promising of the small producers, making extremely authentic and tasty wines.”

The Domaine

Having made wines for his family’s own consumption, Fulcro was started in 2009 as a small project by the passionate vigneron of Manuel Moldes Moraña, or Chicho as he is known by friends and family, and has grown into one of the most exciting wineries in the Albariño capital of Rías Baixas. Manuel’s vineyards are located in the Val do Salnés in front of the Atlantic Ocean, where the climate is mild but humid, and not exposed to the warmer Mediterranean influence of winds from eastern Spain.

The wine making here is hands off and terroir focused, with no pesticides or herbicides used in the vineyards, and with wines bottled by sites according to their soil composition. The wines do not go through malolactic fermentation as Manuel aims for more structure and acidity to produce wines for medium term consumption, but they are aged for longer than the usual 5-6 months in the region before bottling, and are left in contact with lees for longer. Ageing the wines in used oak barrels instead of just stainless steel to craft wines with a fuller body and more complexity also help distinguish the Fulcro wines from its peers.

The resulting wines are floral on the nose, and exhibit the expected bright acidity, citrus fruit, and salinity on the palate, but they also offer more intensity and volume when compared to other wines in the region. Production is small, and the wines are exquisite. As the exclusive importer in Hong Kong, we invite you to discover these world class wines from Spain’s top white wine region.

Fulcro A Pedreira 2020

“The 2020 A Pedreira comes from different small vineyards and is the basic wine here. There is a change in this vintage: they increased the percentage of wine that matured in barrel, trying to age most of the wine for a few months, rotating between stainless steel and barrel, as they want the polished texture and acidity of the wine oxygenated in barrel. The wine has 13% alcohol, didn't go through malolactic and has kept very good freshness and balance. It's clean and tasty, pure and focused. Very good. Some 20,000 bottles produced.”

Score: 93

Fulcro O Equilibrio 2020

“2020 was a year of high acidity, but the 2020 O Equilibrio feels really balanced, harmonious and integrated, with the sensation of very polished acidity even if it is higher than in 2019, polished by the time in oak. It has structure and complexity without being too ripe (it's 13% alcohol), and it has the balance and freshness to develop nicely in bottle. 5,300 bottles produced. It was bottled in August 2021.”

Fulcro A Cesteira 2020

“The 2020 A Cesteira feels sharp and wild with piercing acidity and an effervescent sensation on the palate. It is a little austere on the nose, serious and subtle, electric and vibrant. It has purity, symmetry and nuance and is crystalline and precise. It has 13% alcohol, a pH of 3.01 and 9.4 grams of acidity (tartaric), really unusual parameters—moderate alcohol and great freshness. This comes from a 0.6-hectare plot with pergola vines planted some 45 years ago on slate and clay soils. It matured in stainless steel for seven months and spent four months in 500-liter oak barrels. Production has grown in 2020 to 2,000 bottles. It was bottled in August 2021.”

Fulcro Nas Dunas 2019

“The 2019 Nas Dunas (the dunes) was produced with grapes from a vineyard planted on very fine sand—like beach sand—in the zone of Arra. This soil tends to produce fine and elegant wine that also has volume. It fermented with natural yeasts in a 700-liter oak barrel where it matured for one year. This is fresher than the 2018, and it has moderate ripeness and integrated acidity. 800 bottles were filled in August 2020.”
