Discover the Diversity of the Loire Valley

The Loire Valley is located in the centre of France and is the most extensive vineyard region in the country, the largest white wine region, and the third largest AOC region in France. The variety of wines here is overwhelming.

An iconic white grape variety of the Loire Valley, Chenin Blanc has a surprisingly versatile style. The Vouvray produces a spontaneous, elegant white wine; the Chenin Blanc from Savennières has amazing ageing potential; and as the second largest producer of sparkling wine after Champagne, Crémant made from Chenin Blanc is another source of admiration for this variety.

The Loire Valley makes you forget the Cabernet Franc style of Bordeaux. In Chinon, it is fruity, smooth, and tannic, a style to be loved, while Anjou produces the popular Rosé from Cabernet Franc.

Meanwhile Sauvignon Blanc is making a big splash in the New World, and it may be forgotten that this grape variety originated from France. The unique Silex soil gives the Sauvignon Blanc of Sancerre a more mineral texture and reveals the different terroir of the Loire Valley.

We stock a diverse variety of artisanally made wines from the Loire Valley, and we invite you to discover wines from this under the radar region with our Loire Valley Mixed Case, containing one sparkling wine, one Rosé, two whites, and two reds.

THE WINES

Domaine de la Noblaie MonAnge NV - HK$170 per bottle

The NV Brut Nature Monange blends 70% Cabernet Franc with 30% Chenin Blanc from vines averaging 30 years old. The wine goes into the second fermentation due to an unfinished first alcoholic fermentation and is kept at least 40 months sur lattes prior to release. The Monange is officially announced as a rosé, but the wine in my bottle is lemon to golden-yellow and doesn't show any pink hints, thus I dare to record it as a white vin de mousseux. This release is based 80% on the 2016 harvest and completed with 20% from a solera, and it comes with 12.7% alcohol. The bouquet is intense and fruity and combines ripe, yellow-fleshed fruit aromas with refreshing lemon notes. On the palate, this is a quite rich and textured but fresh and persistent sparkling wine with an elegant mousse, fine brioche notes and a textured mouthfeel. The finish is fresh and with citrus fruit notes and brioche notes. This is a full-bodied aperitif that goes even better during a meal. Tasted in June 2021 from lot 20320.

Domaine de la Noblaie Goutte de Rose 2019 - HK$145 per bottle

Pale pink. Pretty nose of watermelon rind, raspberry and fresh cut flowers. In the mouth, ripe strawberry, lively acidity, rainwater freshness and good structure. A very fine rosé, a cut above. Excellent value.

Domaine Pierre Martin Sancerre Blanc Les Culs de Beaujeu 2018 -  HK$235 per bottle

The 2018 Les Culs de Beaujeu shows a full-bodied, yet never heavy, style of Sancerre from one of the region's steepest vineyards. It opens its arms to embrace you with its breadth, yet maintains clarity of fruit, a rare combination. This wine offers floral notes, nectarine and a fine line of acidity, providing a drawn-out, textural finish. There's the merest lingering hint of heat from alcohol, but perhaps I'm being overly sensitive here; it does not detract from enjoyment.

Domaine Laureau Savennières Les Genêts 2018 – Bt -  HK$360 per bottle

If you're looking for a bold Chenin, the 2018 Les Genets is not it - and it's all the better for it. A rather quiet and tender wine with a subtle, refined nose of apples, Brazil nuts, almond macaroon and florals. While round, there's a sense of calm, purity and no heaviness. The gentle embrace of phenolics is so delicate that it leaves a gently satisfying texture throughout the mouth. There's a fine flush of acidity on the finish. Ends as it began, with calm and tranquility.

Domaine de la Noblaie Pierre de Tuf 2017 -  HK$240 per bottle

From Domaine de la Noblaie’s top parcel, planted in the 1940s. Aged 18 months in mix of new and old oak, clay and porcelain amphora. Pretty and expressive nose of violet, raspberry and black olive. Fruity and light on its feet, offering flavors of bright blackberry and blueberry, with attractive chalkiness at the edges and a friendly, juicy finish. Light, cool and elegant. This would easily and happily convert the Cabernet Franc skeptic in your life.

Jason Wilson, Vinous.com, July 2020

Fermented in an ancient stone vat, the 2017 Chinon Pierre de Tuf is from two low-yielding plots on kaoline (clay-silex) soils. It is a dark colored, very deep and spicy, enormously concentrated Cabernet Franc with smoky but most of all dark berry flavors. Sweet, soft, very rich and powerful but elegant and well balanced, this is a mouth-filling, almost lush and fleshy Chinon with ripe tannins. A bit untamed and leathery in the beginning but exciting and very promising.

Domaine des Roches Neuves Saumur-Champigny Clos de l'Echelier 2018 -  HK$315 per bottle

Dark, brooding, muscular style. From 40-year-old vines surrounded by a 300-year-old wall. Aged 12 months in 12-hectoliter barrels. The nose is full of dark mineral aromas – asphalt, struck stone, smoke – along with lovely notes of rose. Expansive on the palate, featuring an attractive, rich bloodiness in the mouth, with lots of black fruit and pepper. Very intense on the finish. Incredible wine that walks that thrilling line of rusticity and elegance that can be challenging to achieve with Cabernet Franc.
