Folium Vineyard in Marlborough’s Brancott Valley does things differently, and it’s all about the vines🌱. Japanese winemaker Takaki Okada named his NZ winery Folium—Latin for LEAF—because his dry-farmed vines do the hard work, digging deep into clay-based soils shaped by ancient glaciers and rivers. Unlike nearly every other vineyard in Marlborough that relies on irrigation, Folium skips it, pushing the vines’ roots deep to find water. These soils hold just enough moisture to balance the vines, crafting wines that truly capture their terroir and vintage.

Without irrigation, Folium’s vines grow fewer leaves, letting more sunlight reach the grapes. This reduces those grassy, green flavors (Methoxypyrazines) typical of Marlborough. These wines are unlike any Marlborough bottles you know.

With less than 2,000 cases produced annually from very old, low-yield vines in Puligny, these are rare gems. The estate’s sustainable practices – no insecticides or herbicides, hand-picked into small cases and use minimal new oak – ensure purity. Reds are light to medium-bodied, structured, with vibrant red berry and cherry notes that unfold beautifully with air.
