Most Chateauneuf-du-Pape messages sound familiar. This one doesnโt๐.
Domaine Raymond Usseglio & Fils is the real thing: a third-generation family estate in the heart of Chateauneuf-du-Pape๐ซ๐ท. Italian immigrant Francis Usseglio settled in the Southern Rhone in 1931; Raymond founded the domaine in the 1960s, and Stephane has guided it since 1999. Roughly 24 hectares farmed organically and biodynamically. Old vines๐ฑ. Different terroirs blended โ sandy parcels for finesse, clay-marl and galet sites for power. Stephane uses concrete tanks for most fermentations to show fruit cleaner and more directly, rather than masking it with oak โ giving a pure, transparent expression๐. The result is Chateauneuf-du-Pape that is rich but not heavy โ dark fruit, herbs, spice and a long finish. Ripe and intense, yet with structure and freshness to age well.

La Part des Anges 2017 โ Mourvedre-led (around 70%). Deep and plush, more approachable young than Imperiale. Fully vinified and aged in new demi-muids for a stronger oak imprint. Ripe black fruit, savory spice and a structured character.
Imperiale 2017 โ The flagship. Old-vine depth (from vines planted in 1902 on sandy soils), ripe red and black fruit๐ซ, fig, plum and spice. Complete, polished, ageworthy. A more classic Chateauneuf-du-Pape profile.
Les Apotres 2017 โ The rarest (only 3,000 bottles made). 13 authorised grape varieties (both black and white), vinified and aged in amphora with minimal intervention. A layered and complex expression of Chateauneuf-du-Pape with blackberry, rose, licorice and balsamic depth.

A Mourvรจdre-based wine, the 2017 Chateauneuf du Pape la Part des Anges also includes 20% Grenache and 10% Syrah. It's aged mostly in wood, so it's a bit more approachable young than the Cuvรฉe Imperiale, combining hints of pencil shavings with roasted plum on the nose. It's velvety and plush without being overly modern, finishing long and mouthwatering.

The 2017 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Imperiale (from vines planted in 1902) is firm and structured to age magnificently. Roses, black tea and red raspberries all appear on the nose and palate, framed by fine-grained tannins. I suspect it will close down shortly, but there is terrific material here, and the wine will drink well for two decades.

The 2017 Chateauneuf du Pape Les Apotres was made in amphora, with four months of maceration. Based on Grenache, it includes a high proportion of other traditional varieties, including some white grapes. It's exquisitely perfumed, with enchanting scents of strawberries, roses, garrigue and black tea. Full-bodied but delicate and silky in feel, it builds on the finish, like a great Burgundy. With only 3,000 bottles produced (and none in 2018), it will be hard to track any down but well worth the hunt.
