Chateau de Bonnezeaux has quickly won a devoted cult following among sommeliers and natural wine lovers, becoming one of the Loire’s most coveted allocations😊. This historic 19th-century estate in the famous Bonnezeaux appellation — long celebrated for its lush sweet wines — now produces some of the region’s most exciting dry Chenin Blancs.
On the hillside near Chateau de Fesles to the east, with Domaine de Fontaines (former home of the Rousseau family) higher up behind it.
After lying abandoned for over 30 years, the family revived the property in 2012 by placing their cousin Guyonne Saclier de la Batie at the helm. A student of dry Chenin luminaries Mark Angeli and Stéphane Bernaudeau, Guyonne drew inspiration from Angeli — 🤓the undisputed master and pioneer of dry biodynamic wines in the traditionally sweet Coteaux du Layon and Bonnezeaux appellation. She rescued 3 ha of old vines with biodynamic farming and, after two years of careful replanting, released her impressive first vintage in 2016. Illness forced her to step back in 2019, but the journey continues today under the passionate and youthful winemakers Pierre Boisseau and Lea Meslet🙌💕.
They farm nine hectares organically with micro yields, gobelet-trained vines🌱, vertical Champagne presses, and prolonged barrel aging. The hand-harvested grapes are naturally fermented and bottled unfined and unfiltered with minimal sulfur — proudly wearing the humble Vin de France label that lets them fully express Bonnezeaux’s great terroirs.
These wines offer remarkable density, perfume, and striking minerality. With tiny production and growing demand, they are in excellent hands. Join us at the shop for an unforgettable evening.
