Domaine Graeme & Julie Bott: Built from a Garden Plot in Condrieu

Most Northern Rhone domaines begin with a family name on a hillside. This one began with a garden in Verin🏡, and two people who had never owned a vine.

Graeme Bott is from New Zealand; Julie Bott grew up in the Rhone. They met while working at Stephane Ogier in Ampuis. There was no family vineyard behind them, and planted land in these appellations was out of reach. In 2015 they were looking for a first house and found a small one on the hillside of Vérin. The overgrown garden around it already lay inside AOP Condrieu, with Coteau Chery and Chateau-Grillet next door. They bought the house; that ground became the first piece of the domaine🌱. That was the start: scrub cleared, stone walls rebuilt by hand, Viognier planted on decomposed granite. First vintage, 2016. They have since planted across Condrieu, Cote-Rotie, Saint-Joseph and Seyssuel — about 12 hectares in all — still farmed by hand🙌, each parcel picked and vinified on its own.

Small lots, low intervention. The wines are fresh and contemporary rather than built for weight. Viognier is picked early for vibrant acidity; Syrah is handled gently, and aged in mostly used oak. They read as bright and precise — stone and spice more than bulk. That site-first habit is why they belong here.

Domaine Graeme & Julie Bott Condrieu 2018 — Viognier with tension rather than opulence. Green apple, melon and crushed stone; satiny, with a tangerine finish.

Domaine Graeme & Julie Bott Kamaka Terroir de Seyssuel 2019 — Syrah from mica-schist across the river from Cote-Rotie. Kamaka is Maori for stone. Floral, almost Pinot-like, with spice, salt and fine tannin.

Domaine Graeme & Julie Bott Cote-Rotie 2017 — Syrah from schist around Ampuis. Violet, dark cherry, wild herb and pepper; tannins that turn silk with air.

Domaine Graeme & Julie Bott Condrieu 2018 - Bt | VNS93
HK$600 ▷ HK$570

Tasting note

Pale, green-tinged yellow. High-pitched, mineral-accented orchard fruits, Meyer lemon and violet aromas are sharpened by a subtle touch of ginger. Intense pear, tangerine and white peach flavors show a suave blend of richness and delicacy thanks to a core of juicy acidity. Closes minerally, taut and very long, leaving a lingering floral note behind.

Domaine Graeme & Julie Bott Kamaka Terroir de Seyssuel 2019 - Bt | VNS94
HK$650 ▷ HK$615

Tasting note

Saturated magenta. An expansive, complex bouquet evokes red and blue fruit preserves, pungent flowers, olive and exotic spices, along with hints of smoked meat and vanilla. Deeply concentrated yet energetic as well, offering palate-coating cherry-cola, black raspberry and boysenberry flavors, with building violet and star anise notes. The berry and floral notes echo on the persistent finish, which features steadily building tannins and a touch of smokiness.
