Bollinger Champagne is instantly recognised for a reason. The house never chases fashion. Pinot Noir leads the blend, fermentation in used oak barrels builds structure and spice, and long ageing gives the wines real staying power.
Bollinger La Grande Annee is the house’s vintage Champagne🍾: Grand and Premier Cru fruit only, and only in exceptional years that meet Bollinger’s standard. After long ageing on the lees, it is the clearest reading of the house style. La Grande Annee 2014 is taut and lively, with citrus, orchard fruit and a clean, driving finish. La Grande Annee 2002 still has a pleasing mousse, deep flavour, golden apple, lemon and spice through a long, smooth finish. La Grande Annee 1999 shows the house’s oxidative richness yet keeps surprising acidity — fine bubbles✨, toasted pastry, warm nuts and a touch of honeycomb.
Bollinger R.D. Extra Brut 1981 spent 18 years on the lees and was disgorged in 1999. Deep amber with copper tints, almond paste, pecan, white flowers and apricot, then salted caramel and burnt sugar. Fully mature, still concentrated, and singing.🫶

Tasting note
Bollinger’s 2014 La Grande Année is a great way to start the evening as guests mill around Wheeler Farms. It is early evening in Napa, but there is still plenty of action in the winery, where various lots are being pressed under the watchful eye of winemaker Nigel Kinsman. There are some moments where I would very much like to be a civilian, a regular person enjoying the night, but I am more concerned with our guests having a great night, so I quickly go back to check on our wines. The Bollinger 2014 is everything I expected; bright, focused and full of all the energy this late-ripening vintage conferred to the best wines.

Bollinger La Grande Annee Brut 2002 - Bt | AG94

Tasting note
The 2002 Brut La Grande Annee is marvelous. The 2002 is an understated Grande Annee that caresses the palate with layers of effortless, weightless fruit. The mousse is exceptionally fine, which adds to the impression of total elegance. This is a relatively bright, floral Grande Annee with plenty of aromatic lift, inner perfume and no sense of heaviness at all. A rich, creamy finish adds the final note of complexity and pedigree. The 2002 is 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay, 71% from Grand Cru villages and 29% from Premier Crus. Disgorged February 2011. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2022.

Tasting note
The 1999 La Grande Annee is a refined, elegant wine with pretty, exotic notes of apricots, peaches, honey, flowers, smoke and toasted oak. There is notable clarity and precision, in a style that is generous and approachable. The 1999 La Grande Annee is 63% Pinot Noir and 37% Chardonnay, of which 82% came from grand cru vineyards while 18% came from premier cru sites spanning a total of 16 villages. The wine was aged in oak and dosage was 7-9 grams. This bottle was disgorged in July, 2007. I also tasted the February, 2008 disgorgement which showed a more opulent, quality that I found utterly sensual and irresistible. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2014.
