5 Spanish Wines — A More Interesting Spain Than the Familiar One
🇪🇸Spain is more than big oaky reds. A new generation is coaxing electric, mineral, saline whites from volcanic slopes, limestone hillsides and old vines. This selection is a short tour of that Spain 🤩— plus one of the great traditional Riojas. Five bottles, five stories. 5% off for a limited time till Sep 7.
From the Basque Country, Alfredo Egia Izaki 2023 is Bizkaiko Txakolina far from the light, spritzy wine most people know. Golden, saline and fresh, with real texture, it is the Basque white you’ve likely never tasted. Only about 4,000 bottles.
In Castilla y Leon, Cantalapiedra farms plots on sandy-loam to clay-loam soils over limestone, covered in the region’s typical pebbles. Majuelo del Chiviritero 2024 is Verdejo from a 1981 plot on pebbly limestone: chamomile, stone fruit, a chalky mineral core and a crunchy, salty finish. Its neighbour, Majuelo el Espejo 2023, comes from a 1999-planted plot🌱 with shallower hillside soils, which shows more tension and length — ripe pear, fennel and herbs over a mineral spine. Two sides of the same hill, very interesting.
Envinate — Roberto Santana, Alfonso Torrente, Laura Ramos and José Martínez — is a project of Spain’s new generation, built on abandoned old-vine vineyards of immense potential and non-intervention. Envinate Palo Blanco 2022 comes from over-100-year-old Listan Blanco on black volcanic soils🌋 in Tenerife’s Valle de la Orotava. Destemmed and raised in older oak foudres without malolactic fermentation, it is saline, electric and tense, with preserved lemon, seashells🐚 and volcanic rock.
Last, the Spain we know at its best🍷: Marques de Murrieta Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial 2005. Tempranillo with a little Mazuelo, long-aged in oak then bottle, it opens slowly in the glass with violet, spice, walnut and dark fruit. A serious, age-worthy classic that belongs in any collection.
Specific places. A more interesting Spain than the familiar one.🤗

Alfredo Egia Izaki 2023 - Bt
HK$450 ▷ HK$425
A Txakoli from the Basque Country, blending 70% Hondarrabi Zerratia (Petit Courbu) and 30% Hondarrabi Zuri (Gros Courbu). Whole-cluster pressed and spontaneously fermented, it was aged on lees for a year: 30% in used barrels and 70% in steel. It shows golden hues, phenolic grip, and saline minerality. Weighty yet lifted by bright acidity, with mature fruit and a long, sapid finish. Fewer than 4,000 bottles produced.
Cantalapiedra Viticultores 'Majuelo del Chiviritero La Seca' Vino Blanco de la Tierra de Castilla y Leon 2024 - Bt | RP94
HK$450 ▷ HK$425
The 2024 Majuelos del Chiviritero comes from a 2.53-hectare plot at 750 meters above sea level. It was planted by Isaac Cantalapiedra and his father, Heliodoro, in 1981 on classical fluvial terraces of La Seca covered in boulders; and in 2024, they added some more plots of similar characteristics and age that were used before for Cantayano, so they made a slight adjustment of the name. They always get low yields here, so it's a wine with more concentration, depth and volume, with the energy and tension from the limestone. The juice from the direct pressing of the bunches fermented with all the sediments in used French oak barrels with indigenous yeasts for 15 to 20 days without temperature control and had full malolactic fermentation. The wine matured in French oak barrels for 11 months, followed by another seven months in stainless steel. 2024 was cooler than 2023, and the wines show more precision and are finer-boned. This is elegant and streamlined, more about the soil than the variety, tasty, with a salty twist in the finish. It has contained ripeness and 13.5% alcohol, with a pH of 3.26 and 6.63 grams of acidity. It grew in volume and quality; vintages are like that... There's finesse and elegance. It overdelivers for the price. 19,672 bottles and 180 magnums produced. It was bottled in February 2026.

Cantalapiedra Viticultores 'Majuelo el Espejo La Seca' Vino Blanco de la Tierra de Castilla y Leon 2023 - Bt | RP94+
HK$550 ▷ HK$520
The 2023 Majuelo El Espejo is the fourth vintage of this single-vineyard Verdejo from a north-facing plot of four hectares planted in 2001 with more clay, gray marl and limestone mother rock and less boulders on the surface. The bunches were pressed, and the juice fermented with indigenous yeasts in used French oak barrels with no temperature control, for some 25 days. The wine matured in 500-liter French oak barrels and 700-liter Austrian foudres for 24 months, double than before, plus seven months in stainless steel. There was some new and newish oak, plus the warmer and riper year give the wine a slight creaminess. It finished at 14.3% alcohol, with a pH of 3.23 and 6.1 grams of acidity. It opens up nicely in the glass, becoming more streamlined with time and air, and the palate is better than the nose, with the chalky sensation and the saltiness in the finish. It has more volume, but it's balanced and harmonious, a little more powerful this year. It's a very good effort for the conditions of the year. 9,754 bottles and 120 magnums produced. It was bottled in October 2025.

Envinate Palo Blanco 2022 - Bt | RP98
HK$580 ▷ HK$550
The heat from late August didn't affect much the grapes that were used for the 2022 Palo Blanco, as they are picked much later than the grapes from other zones of Tenerife. So, the 2022 vintage in Los Realejos is a lot fresher than in Taganana or La Orotava. In fact, I liked the palate of this 2022 better than that of the 2021; it's vibrant, lovely and fresh. The nose is still a little reductive, and the notes of flowers and herbs take time to emerge. 13,000 bottles and 167 magnums produced. It was bottled in July 2023.

Marques de Murrieta Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial 2005 - Bt | RP96
HK$1750 ▷ HK$1660
The 2005 Castillo de Ygay Gran Reserva Especial, a classic among classics, is back in top form with the excellent 2005 vintage. It’s produced from a blend of 89% Tempranillo and 11% Mazuelo (aka Carinena), a difficult grape that is in high esteem at the winery (they exceptionally produced a varietal Mazuelo in 2000 to celebrate their 150th anniversary) as they consider it adds acidity and aging potential to the blend and has been selected specifically to make part of the flagship wine’s blend. In 2005, the Tempranillo was harvested on September 30, the Mazuelo on October 3, and fermented separately in stainless steel vats. The Tempranillo ages in American oak barrels and the Mazuelo in French ones, both for a period of 30 months. The wine matures for a further two years in bottle before being released. It’s extremely backward and tight, showing very young, with a balanced nose between spice, tertiary and cherry fruit aromas. It’s a powerful, still young vintage, with plenty of glycerin, body, round tannins. An austere wine (is it the Mazuelo?), it is complex and ever-changing in the palate. It has a sense of harmony that only the best wines have. Very long and elegant. I loved its serious and austere overall feeling. 100,000 bottles produced. This is a true vin de garde which develops complex notes of violet and meat with time in the glass. This is a Gran Reserva greatly marked by the Mazuelo, which should give it great ability to age. At this quality level it represents very good value. Drink 2014-2030.
