Folium Vineyard - Artisanal Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc Offer

The Domaine

Following his studies at UC Davis in the United States, and a stint managing Clos Henri's vineyards, Takaki Okada started Folium Vineyard as a boutique and organically farmed estate with 8ha of vineyards located in the Brancott Valley in the Marlborough Region on New Zealand’s South Island. The wines crafted here are distinctively European in style, with vintage variation, and has a subtlety that complements rather than overpowers food. They have a great following in Japan and other parts of Asia, and the Folium Vineyard Pinot Noir Reserve 2015 was featured as a great match for the much loved Peking Duck dish in the immensely popular Japanese manga series about wine, The Drops of God (神之水滴).

Takaki san believes that winemaking starts in the vineyard. Detailed care in the vineyard starts with pruning in the winter, followed by canopy management, such as shoot and bunch thinning, and leaf plucking during the summer, all the way to hand harvesting at optimum ripeness in the autumn. Different management takes place for different clones or vine ages to match the inimitable needs of each parcel. Vinification is hands off, and the wines are made with attentive craftsmanship.

Folium Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc 2019

“Attractive, lightly grassy and herbal aromas with lime leaf, lime juice and a gently flinty edge. This is subtly complex and very focused. The palate has a very composed core of lime and gently nutty, almond-like flavors, good acidity and smooth textural resolve. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink now. Screw cap.”

Score: 93

Folium Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc Reserve 2017

“A concentrated and intense expression of Marlborough sauvignon with bright citrus and lighter tropical fruit aromas neatly framed in more savoury, nutty and stony elements. The concentration on the palate is impressive, as is the assertive, gently textural kick on the finish. Holds long. Screw cap. Drink now.”

Score: 93

James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com, December 2018

Folium Vineyard Pinot Noir 2018

“This has such terrific refinement and purity. The nose is quite floral with elegant red cherries and strawberries, as well as red flowers and gently sappy grass and light dried, woody notes. The palate is beautifully cut with fine, focused and vibrant tannin, carrying fresh, red-cherry flavor. Drink now. Screw cap.”

Score: 92

James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com, October 2019

Folium Vineyard Pinot Noir Reserve 2019

“Cherries, redcurrants, wild strawberries, dried flowers and clay on the nose. Medium-bodied and fresh with juicy character. Mineral, fruity and silky. Vibrant finish with excellent length. Energetic! Drink now.”

Score: 94

James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com, November 2021

Folium Vineyard Pinot Noir Reserve 2014

“The 2014 Pinot Noir Reserve avoids any herbal, underripe notes, instead offering up dark cherry fruit framed by cedary oak. Despite the physiological ripeness, there's no excessive alcohol or heat, and this medium-bodied wine weighs in at a modest 13.5% alcohol. It's silky in texture, with soft tannins that fan out across a long finish.”
