The 2016 vintage was one of the stronger years of the decade👏🏻. It delivered particularly impressive results in Tuscany and the Southern Rhone😚, while Burgundy also produced excellent wines — though yields were significantly lower and quality varied noticeably between different plots and vineyards. Now at ten years old, these wines have hit a beautiful sweet spot — combining ripe concentration, vibrant freshness, lively acidity, and classic structure. They’re drinking with real energy and harmony today, while still offering excellent aging potential.

Deep brilliant red. Expressive cherry and black raspberry aromas are complicated by suave floral and baking spice nuances. Sappy, seamless and broad in the mouth, offering appealingly sweet red and dark berry preserve flavors that become deeper as the wine open up. Shows repeating red fruit character on the impressively persistent, floral-dominated finish, which is framed by velvety, harmonious tannins.

Passopisciaro Franchetti Rosso 2016 - Bt | VNS98+

Fully saturated, impenetrable inky-ruby color. Smells very concentrated but offers pristine herbal and mineral nuances to the ripe red and black fruit aromas and flavors. Much more refined in the mouth than the powerful nose indicates, with lively acidity nicely extending flavors similar to the aromas on the long rich and very dense finish. A marvelous wine that is both rich and concentrated and yet light on its feet. Finishes with an enticing, spicy juicy note. This blend of 60% Petit Verdot and 40% Cesanese d’Affile is an absolutely superb wine; well done. I’m curious to see how this develops over the next few years and if it will one day merit a perfect score or not.

Domaine de Bellene Vosne Romanee Les Suchots Premier Cru 2016 - Bt | NM92-94

The 2016 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots, matured in 100% new oak with 100% whole bunch, has a lovely bouquet with floral, rose petal scents waltzing with redcurrant and raspberry fruit. I love the delineation here. The palate is medium-bodied with supple, ripe red berry fruit, veins of blueberry and cassis that dovetail into quite a structured, almost Malconsorts-like finish. Great potential.

Maison Albert Bichot Latricieres Chambertin Grand Cru 2016 - Bt | NM94-96

The 2016 Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru was picked on 3 October, blended with 35% whole bunch fruit and matured in 40% new oak. I appreciate the nose here: very well defined, nicely focused, a mixture of red and black fruit, a little conservative and straightlaced like Latricières should be. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannin and crisp acidity, harmonious and poised with a really classy and sophisticated finish that is a joy. One of the best from Albert Bichot this year. Recommended.

Biondi Santi Brunello di Montalcino 2016 - Bt | RP97+

From a benchmark vintage, the Biondi-Santi 2016 Brunello di Montalcino reveals a gorgeous appearance with medium concentration highlighted by shiny hues of garnet and dark ruby. The first thing you notice is the compact dark fruit and rather robust textural fiber and power presented here. You almost bite into this wine, and you taste some fine grain linked to the young tannins. That, with the fresh acidity that is the hallmark signature of this estate, guarantees long cellar aging, and I would put my money on this vintage for long-long-term longevity. The fruit is compact and supple with dried cherry, blue flower, iron ore and candied orange peel. There is tobacco, balsam herb and gardening soil in a supporting role, and the wine is beautifully fleshed out but also rich in this balanced growing season. It surely needs more time to come together with pinpoint precision, but the wine's elegance is a certainty.
