10% Off Rhone Valley Wines: Chave, E. Guigal, Rayas & More

The Rhone Valley never fails to captivate🫶: in the North, steep, often granite‑strewn slopes yield Syrah of bright mineral lift, peppery spice and muscular, ageworthy structure; in the South, sun‑baked terraces and pebble‑strewn plains produce Grenache‑led blends with ripe red‑fruit generosity, garrigue aromatics and plush Mediterranean warmth. Across the valley, vineyards speak clearly of place — delivering wines that are expressive, terroir‑driven and unmistakably Rhone.
We know many of you are passionate about these wines🍷, so we are delighted to announce a special promotion dedicated entirely to the Rhone. From May 19-25, enjoy 10% off our full selection of Rhone wines🔥🔥🔥.
😚Whether you prefer the North or the South, this list offers plenty to explore and enjoy, with an excellent mix of mature vintages and standout cuvees:
Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage 2015 – Pure, refined examples of what Hermitage can achieve, showing remarkable richness, gorgeous depth of fruit, minerality and ageing grace.
M. Chapoutier Ermitage Le Pavillon 1989 – The debut vintage of Le Pavillon🤭, a historic and still remarkably vibrant bottling with exceptional depth and decades of life ahead.
E. Guigal Cote-Rotie La Landonne, La Mouline & La Turque 2009 – The iconic “La La La” trio in a superb vintage 🙌— intense, aromatic and profoundly layered, each earning a perfect RP100 score.
Domaine Jamet Cote-Rotie Cote Brune 2006 – Classic, savoury Syrah with dark fruit, olive and that distinctive Cote-Rotie minerality.
Impressive range of Cornas from Domaine Lionnet (including several Terre Brulee vintages), plus their Saint-Joseph Pierre Blanche (100% Roussanne) and the Vin de France Rien Que du Carignan from 95-year-old vines🫰, alongside Franck Balthazar and Auguste Clape – all powerful, peppery and granite-driven.
Outstanding Chateauneuf-du-Pape from Henri Bonneau, Domaine de la Janasse, Jean Royer and Pierre Usseglio, plus the elegant Chateau Rayas and Fonsalette wines🤭.

Pale, green-tinged yellow. High-pitched, mineral-accented orchard fruits, Meyer lemon and violet aromas are sharpened by a subtle touch of ginger. Intense pear, tangerine and white peach flavors show a suave blend of richness and delicacy thanks to a core of juicy acidity. Closes minerally, taut and very long, leaving a lingering floral note behind.

The 2017 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Imperiale (from vines planted in 1902) is firm and structured to age magnificently. Roses, black tea and red raspberries all appear on the nose and palate, framed by fine-grained tannins. I suspect it will close down shortly, but there is terrific material here, and the wine will drink well for two decades.

Saturated magenta. An expansive, complex bouquet evokes red and blue fruit preserves, pungent flowers, olive and exotic spices, along with hints of smoked meat and vanilla. Deeply concentrated yet energetic as well, offering palate-coating cherry-cola, black raspberry and boysenberry flavors, with building violet and star anise notes. The berry and floral notes echo on the persistent finish, which features steadily building tannins and a touch of smokiness.

Cassis, cherry pit, candied licorice and smoked meat aromas are complemented by suggestions of black tea and potpourri. Appealing sweet and focused on the palate, offering intense black and blue fruit, exotic spice and candied violet flavors and a touch of smokiness. Finishes extremely long and youthfully tannic, with the blue fruit, spice and smoke notes repeating.

The 2017 Chateauneuf du Pape Les Apotres was made in amphora, with four months of maceration. Based on Grenache, it includes a high proportion of other traditional varieties, including some white grapes. It's exquisitely perfumed, with enchanting scents of strawberries, roses, garrigue and black tea. Full-bodied but delicate and silky in feel, it builds on the finish, like a great Burgundy. With only 3,000 bottles produced (and none in 2018), it will be hard to track any down but well worth the hunt.

Inky ruby. Intensely aromatic cherry and dark berry aromas are complemented by hints of licorice, peppery spices and cola. Deeply concentrated but taut dark fruit flavors show a suave blend of power and vivacity, and a mineral nuance adds lift. Gains heft and sweetness on the clinging finish, which features a smoky mineral quality and fine-grained tannins that come on slowly

The 1990 La Sizeranne, made from yields of 28 hectoliters per hectare, has begun to close up. The color is a dark purple, and with coaxing, the super ripe nose of cassis, licorice, minerals, and spices has begun to emerge. This full-bodied, tannic wine was aged in 60% new oak casks. It possesses copious quantities of black fruit flavors, a chewy texture, and very fine length. I suspect this wine needs until the turn of the century to approach maturity. It should last for 25-30 years. Last tasted 12/95.

The 2009 Beaucastel Chateauneuf du Pape is reminiscent of their brilliant 1985. It will be one of the rare Beaucastels that is drinkable upon release. Made from this estate’s classic blend, it possesses soft tannins as well as a silky, open-knit seductiveness, a dense plum/purple color and a beautiful perfume of smoky Provencal herbs intermixed with grilled steak juices, garrigue, kirsch and blue as well as black fruits. The wine is full-bodied, unctuously textured, and silky smooth (the latter characteristic being somewhat atypical for a young Beaucastel). If it performs like the 1985, it will drink well young and continue to do so for 25 or more years.

The 1997 Hermitage La Chapelle has begun to completely close down, which is surprising in view of how sweet, seductive, and precocious this vintage can be. However, the color seems to get deeper with exposure to air (the wine was far more drinkable after 24 hours of aeration than it was upon opening).
The moderately intense bouquet exhibits plenty of ripe blackberry and cherry fruit, in addition to spicy, mineral characteristics. There is considerable weight and volume, but the wine is tight, and nearly impenetrable, leaving an impression of a large, deep, four-square monolith in need of 7-10 years of cellaring - at the minimum.
This is an outstanding Hermitage La Chapelle that will have at least three decades of positive evolution. For readers intent on committing infanticide, open and decant it 12-24 hours in advance. The improvement is dramatic. Perhaps it is Jacques Jaboulet's preference to bottle with very high levels of CO2 (1200 ppm) that makes this wine so difficult to taste in its youth. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2025

Inky ruby. A highly perfumed, expansive bouquet evokes ripe cherry, black raspberry and cola, along with complicating notes of candied flowers, incense and smoky minerals. Sappy and expressive on the palate, offering intense red and dark berry preserve and violet pastille flavors underscored and sharpened by juicy acidity. Shows excellent focus and fruit-driven thrust on the youthfully tannic finish, which hangs on with serious tenacity. The quality of Christine Vernay's red wines has steadily been approaching that of her Condrieus in recent years, which is really saying something

As I stated last year, there is no Hommage a Jacques Perrin in 2006, but Beaucastel’s 2006 Chateauneuf du Pape is performing even better from bottle than it did last year. Its dense plum/ruby/purple color is followed by a big, sweet perfume of black truffles, camphor, earth, incense, new saddle leather, and loads of peppery, blackberry, and herb-infused, meaty, black cherry fruit. Deep, full-bodied, and dense, with sweet tannin, this explosively rich Chateauneuf is a stronger effort than the 2005, 2004, or 2003. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2028.
