The Magic of Mas de Daumas Gassac – “Only Grand Cru of the Midi”

In the heart of the majestic Gassac Valley, 👑Mas de Daumas Gassac stands as a true winemaking legend of the South of France. Founded in 1974 by Aime and Veronique Guibert, 🇫🇷the Languedoc estate was born from a remarkable discovery: rare, powder-fine red glacial limestone soils, strikingly similar to those found in Burgundy’s Cote d’Or. Today, winemaker Samuel Guibert and his brothers continue the family’s passionate vision.

Often referred to as “the Only Grand Cru of the Midi”, these wines come from a breathtaking patchwork of small, forest-enclosed parcels🌳 planted with over 40 rare grape varieties sourced from around the world. The vineyards are dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon🍇, supported by Merlot, Malbec, Cabernet Franc, Tannat, Syrah, Pinot Noir and more for the reds, while the whites feature Chardonnay, Viognier, Petit Manseng, Marsanne and several rare international varieties planted on chalkier soils. 🏞️The cool microclimate, shaped by the Gassac River, natural springs, and surrounding mountains, gives the wines their exceptional vibrancy, finesse, and depth.

The flagship red🍷, built around 80% Cabernet Sauvignon with a diverse mix of other varieties, delivers profound depth and character, while the sophisticated white blend brings refreshing elegance and intriguing layers of complexity💘.

Farmed organically from the very beginning, with slow wild-yeast fermentations, minimal sulfur, and careful barrel aging, these wines are vibrant and approachable in youth, yet develop remarkable grace and longevity over decades.

Mas de Daumas Gassac Rouge 2020 - Bt | RP93
HK$480 ▷ HK$455

The newest vintage of this classic Languedoc red is a solid effort. The 2020 IGP Saint Guilhem le Desert is 71% Cabernet Sauvignon, with no more than 6% of any other single grape variety present. Naturally, cassis elements lead the way, backed by black cherries and herbal notes, plus a subtle, barely noticeable layer of cedar tying everything together. It's medium to full-bodied, streamlined and smooth in feel, with a long, silky, elegant finish.

Mas de Daumas Gassac Rouge 2021 - Bt | VNS90
HK$510 ▷ HK$485

The elegant 2021 Rouge offers discrete raspberry and violet alongside rustic and leafy undertones. Sporting less flavor concentration and overall intensity compared to the surrounding vintages, the 2021 is a delicate and laid-back Mas de Daumas Gassac that shouldn’t take too long to come around.

Mas de Daumas Gassac Blanc 2020 - Bt | JR17
HK$550 ▷ HK$520

28% Viognier, 23% Petit Manseng, 20% Chardonnay, 12% Chenin Blanc and 17% a mix of rare varieties.
Banana, melon, pineapple on the nose. Much less confected than expected on the palate, thanks to a line of acidity keeping the palate tart, and a pithy, apricot-skin flavour (from the Viognier?) Does a great job of combining the qualities of the main varieties – texture from Chenin, stone fruit from Viognier, acid from Petit Manseng. Finishes with attractive orange-peel notes. Way better than most Côtes du Rhônes. Not just a wine of terroir, this is good winemaking.
