2016 remains one of the strongest Italian wine vintages since 2000🇮🇹, especially for its balance. In Piedmont, the growing season was long and even, with warm days and cool nights that preserved Nebbiolo’s perfume, acidity, and tension; in Tuscany, Sangiovese ripened with clear definition and freshness. At ten years the top wines are still young—tannins firm and fruit still bright—yet many already show the clarity and structure that make the year special👏🏻, with several now entering a long drinking window that will reward further patience.
That range appears across styles and prices. Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco DOCG 2016 offers the vintage’s open elegance: bright red fruit and rose petals with fine, manageable tannins. It is already drinkable today—especially after decanting—and will become even more complete with a few more years in bottle. Nervi Conterno Gattinara Vigna Molsino 2016 shows a more mineral, alpine character. Luciano Sandrone Barolo Le Vigne 2016 and Vietti Barolo Rocche di Castiglione 2016 deliver the depth and perfume that define 2016—coiled yet balanced, with the bones for decades. Soldera sits apart, an ethereal, translucent expression of Sangiovese that already feels transparent rather than closed.
Together they show why the 2016 vintage still stands out: so many places found a rare equilibrium between ripeness and freshness👍. Some are approachable today, while more reticent wines such as Molsino will clearly benefit from further cellaring.

Cantina dei Produttori Nebbiolo di Carema Etichetta Bianca 'Carema Riserva' 2016 - Bt | AG95
HK$330 ▷ HK$310
The 2016 Carema Riserva is another knock-out effort from the Produttori di Carema, the local cooperative that has really been on fire these last few vintages. Open-knit and inviting, but with all the complexity that is so typical of the appellation, the 2016 is superb. Crushed flowers, mint, sweet tobacco, cedar and licorice are all woven together in a super-expressive Carema that offers tons of complexity in a relatively accessible style for a young wine from the appellation. The Riserva is a selection of the best casks in the cellar, with the wine aged for an added year in cask, so three years’ in neutral oak in total. That extra year in oak vis-à-vis the Classico does take with it some of the fruit while emphasizing more savory and mineral qualities. Power and finesse come together so well in this textbook Carema.

Caiarossa Rosso di Toscana IGT 2016 - Bt | RP96
HK$400 ▷ HK$380
The 2016 Caiarossa will be released in September. This wine is a blend of seven grapes—42% Cabernet Franc, 25% Merlot, 15.5% Syrah, 6% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Petit Verdot, 4.5% Sangiovese and 1% Alicante. This vintage sees a slightly higher percentage of Cabernet Franc than usual, but I am told that the 2018 edition will see more Syrah instead. The bouquet presents a beautiful first wave of dark fruit that pushes the limits of ripeness but remains safely within the realm of elegance. The aromas are balanced and focused with blackberry, cassis, and light touches of salty or rusty mineral. The wine is not too constructed or big in the mouth, rather is shows a delicate level of elegances that absolutely seals the deal. Some 57,000 bottles were made.

Castellare di Castellina I Sodi di San Niccolo Toscana IGT 2016 - Bt | RP96+
HK$600 ▷ HK$570
The Castellare di Castellina 2016 I Sodi di S. Niccolò is 85% Sangioveto (otherwise known as Sangiovese) and 15% Malvasia Nera. I tasted number 9,949 out of 29,230 bottles filled in January 2020. This is a true beauty and a wine that makes a lasting impact. I came back to my opened bottle some 24 hours later, and the wine tasted even better. It shows enormous purity and focus, with specific aromas that remind you of its Tuscan origins. Those aromas are very Mediterranean in character with rosemary and crushed lavender, followed by wild cherry, dried raspberry and cassis. The tannins are elegant and finely integrated, and the wine leaves nothing but long, polished sensations behind. This is one of the best vintages of I Sodi di S. Niccolò I have encountered in 20 years.

Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco DOCG 2016 - Bt | RP95
HK$650 ▷ HK$615
The 2016 Barbaresco is a tight and beautiful wine that will require more time to unwind and soften. This beautifully balanced vintage is characterized by a tight inner core of fruit that underlines the graceful aging capacity of these wines. The 2016 is shaping up to be one destined for long cellar aging. Now in its youth, the wine offers wild berry, rose and licorice aromas.

Cigliuti Serraboella Barbaresco DOCG 2016 - Bt | AG95
HK$750 ▷ HK$710
The 2016 Barbaresco Serraboella is rich, powerful and explosive, with tremendous depth. A Barbaresco of structure and intensity. Just as it showed from barrel, the 2016 is powerful and imposing, with layers of deeply-pitched, balsamic aromas and flavors woven into its virile, tannic frame. Readers will have to be patient with the 2016, as it is nowhere near ready. Once again, the Cigliuti Barbaresco Serraboella is one of the stand outs of the year.

Nervi Conterno Gattinara Vigna Molsino 2016 - Bt | AG96+
HK$750 ▷ HK$710
Tasted next to the Valferana, the 2016 Gattinara Vigna Molsino is much more nervous in feel. Iron, dried herbs, sweet dried cherry, mint, crushed rocks, white pepper and earthy notes give the Molsino a good deal of aromatic complexity to match its intense, saline-infused minerality. Today, though, the tannins and acids are almost overpowering. Readers will find an old-school, classically austere Gattinara that needs 10-15 years to be at its best. The 2016 is an absolute jewel of a wine, but it should be purchased only by readers with either very good genes are a ton of optimism regarding their own longevity.

Nervi Conterno Gattinara Vigna Valferana 2016 - Bt | AG96
HK$750 ▷ HK$710
The 2016 Gattinara Vigna Valferana is every bit as impressive from bottle as it was from cask. Rich and resonant, the 2016 is so supremely beautiful as it opens up in the glass. It is a wine of real breadth and textural expansiveness. Rose petal, mint, sweet dried cherry, tar, anise and orange peel are some of the nuances that emerge, but the Valferana is a wine to admire for its total sense of balance. In a word: Lights out. Make that two words.

E. Pira & Figli Chiara Boschis Barolo Cannubi 2016 - Bt | RP98/AG98
HK$1300 ▷ HK$1235
The E Pira-Chiara Boschis 2016 Barolo Cannubi is a gorgeous wine that affirms the classic beauty of Nebbiolo. This wine is like a statue of a Grecian goddess with perfect proportions and feminine aesthetic appeal. The bouquet peels back to reveal many layers with bright fruit, white pepper, mint, orange peel and tangy licorice. The tannins are polished and fine with a touch of that distinctive limestone chalkiness that you sometimes taste in Cannubi. Vivid acidity seals the deal on this supremely elegant, fresh and graceful wine.
-98, Monica Larner, June 2020 Week 3, The Wine Advocate, July 2020
The 2016 Barolo Cannubi is beautifully perfumed and gracious. Sweet red berry, kirsch, mint, tobacco and dried flowers all lift from the glass. A wine of total finesse, the 2016 is just stunning in its beauty and arresting sensuality. Time in the glass brings out the wine's silkiness and captivating inner perfume. This is such a fabulous expression of Cannubi. What a wine!

Luciano Sandrone Barolo Le Vigne 2016 - Bt | RP100
HK$1850 ▷ HK$1755
I absolutely adore this wine on every emotional and intellectual level. I can still taste it today, weeks after my first sampling. The Luciano Sandrone 2016 Barolo Le Vigne is a stirring and profound expression that pulls on your heartstrings. I found it to be unforgettable, quite literally, inspiring one of those celebrated "wow" moments that we wine lovers so desperately seek in bottle after bottle. Le Vigne is a clever blend of fruit from Baudana in Serralunga d'Alba (offering the power), Villero in Castiglione Falletto (shaping the precision), Vignane in Barolo (adding to the purity of the aromas) and Merli in Novello (that helps to flesh out the fruit). This intersection of various vineyards spanning the appellation creates a pyramid of perfection and beauty. The wine shows large construction, but that fruit weight is balanced against the vivid cherry, spice, aniseed and campfire ash that gently lift from the bouquet.

Vietti Barolo Rocche di Castiglione 2016 - Bt | RP100
HK$3200 ▷ HK$3040
The Vietti 2016 Barolo Rocche di Castiglione is a complete wine, offering exact measures of purity, intensity, freshness and structure. This is the 360-degree Barolo from Vietti, with fruit sourced closest to home in Castiglione Falletto. Rocche di Castiglione sees more shade hours, and that becomes an important factor in the hottest vintages and the longest growing seasons. It creates diurnal shifts that positively impact the purity and brilliant focus of the fruit. Of all the comuni of Barolo, Castiglione Falletto produced exceptional results across the board in this classic vintage. Dark fruit, pressed lilac, blood orange, powdered licorice, balsam herb, spice, iron ore and aniseed fit together perfectly like pieces in a puzzle. Once completed, that puzzle offers a dazzling panoramic portrait of this special Barolo territory. A mere 3,394 bottles and 300 magnums were produced.

Cappellano Otin Fiorin Pie Rupestris - Nebiolo 2016 - Mag
HK$6800 ▷ HK$6460
The 2016 Barolo Rupestris is unbelievably delicate. A Barolo of haunting beauty, the Rupestris is endowed with sneaky concentration that reveals itself only with time in the glass. Potent tannins and bright acids give the Rupestris fabulous energy. Readers should be prepared to cellar the 2016 for a number of years. It is one of the most reticent young vintages I have ever tasted here. Dried cherry, mint, cedar, dried flowers and sweet pipe tobacco linger on the sinewy finish.

Soldera (Case Basse) Toscana 2016 - Bt | AG97
HK$8600 ▷ HK$8170
The 2016 Toscana Sangiovese finds Gianfranco Soldera at his best. A complex, dynamic wine, the 2016 possesses explosive energy to match its electric personality. Macerated cherry, herbs, dried rose petals, cedar and wildflowers are some of the many notes that come alive in the glass. The wine’s deep, layered character and overall nuance are the stuff dreams are made of. Superb.
