Mosel’s steep, slate-rich slopes yield mineral-driven Rieslings known for their bright acidity and expressive fruit. A standout example is the Egon Muller Scharzhofberger Riesling Spatlese 2019, hailed by Stephan Reinhardt in Wine Advocate as “Scharzhofberger at its very best and a Spatlese close to perfection”. Another notable name from Mosel is Peter Lauer, boasting over 175 years of winemaking experience. They produce both dry and sparkling Rieslings from the Saar’s finest slopes, celebrated for their crisp acidity and layered complexity. Be sure to try their Sekt sparkling wines, crafted using the traditional Champagne method, which offers a delightful creamy texture.
Hofgut Falkenstein, in Mosel’s Saar subregion, focuses on ultra-traditional Rieslings marked by crystalline minerality. Their grapes are hand-harvested at lower ripeness levels and fermented in large casks. The Spatlese trocken from Krettnacher Altenberg is particularly notable for its pleasant herbaceous notes. Meanwhile, their Krettnacher and other dry wines highlight intriguing salinity and umami, while Euchariusberg wines balance pure fruit with mineral-crystalline acidity.
Mosel is also home to exceptional Pinot Noir (Spatburgunder)🍇. A great choice is the Markus Molitor Graacher Himmelreich Spatburgunder 3 Star Fass No. 1 2014, which showcases an elegant nose of blackberries and smokiness, complemented by perfectly ripe fruit and vibrant mineral expression.
In Rheinhessen, Weingut Keller’s extensive vineyards in Florsheim-Dalsheim span 18 hectares, with 15 classified as Grosse Lage. Once viewed as too cold, the highlands now benefit from climate change, significantly enhancing wine quality. The diverse terroir, featuring volcanic soils to the west, quartz to the north, red clay in the east, and limestone in the hills, creates an ideal environment for a wide range of wines.
In Franken, Silvaner thrives in its clay-limestone soils, imparting unique minerality.
