Folium Vineyard - Artisanal Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc Offer

Takaki Okada started Folium Vineyard as a boutique and organically farmed estate with 8ha of vineyards located in the Brancott Valley in the Marlborough Region on New Zealand’s South Island. The wines crafted here are distinctively European in style, with vintage variation, and has a subtlety that complements rather than overpowers food. They have a great following in Japan and other parts of Asia, and the Folium Vineyard Pinot Noir Reserve 2015 was featured as a great match for the much loved Peking Duck dish in the immensely popular Japanese manga series about wine, The Drops of God (神之水滴).

Collectible German Rarity from 140 Years Old Ungrafted Vines

Only 600 bottles produced each year from ungrafted old vines that date back to 1870, today’s ex-Domaine offer is of the rare 2018 and 2019 vintages of the Creutz Sylvaner cuvee from the historic Sylvaner producer Weingut Zehnthof Luckert. The wine is complex, full-bodied, saline, and with elegant texture. It’s a match against great Burgundies in blind tasting, and as with all the other Luckert Sylanvers, it is made to age and should ideally be left to rest in the cellar or decanted in advance before serving now.

Piero Benevelli Barolo 2017 Assortment Case Offer

Founded in 1978 by Piero Benevelli, the father of current proprietor Massimo Benevelli, the estate has been going from strength to strength in recent years. From Fresia, Dolcetto, and Barbera, to the three Barolo crus, each cuvee of the Estate exhibits their own character, with elegance and balance a common theme across the wines. The vineyards are mainly on the hillsides of Monforte, a commune at the south eastern boundary of the Barolo DOCG producing zone. The winery and cellars are in Le Coste di Monforte, and the focus is always in the vineyards, consistent with Massimo’s belief that great wines only follow from the best grapes.

Domaine Jean Royer - Southern Rhone Mixed Case

The Royer family owns 5 hectares of vineyards in Châteauneuf du Pape stretching back to the 1800s, but historically always sold their grapes to negociants and rented out their vines. This changed in 1985, when former rugby player Jean Marie Royer finished his oenology studies and returned to the estate to take charge and started bottling wines under his own name. The wines produced here are always amongst the more elegant samples of Châteauneuf du Pape, dominated by ripe elegant red fruit and more Burgundian in style, with Grenache being the dominating grape in the Southern Rhône blend.

Domaine Lionnet is a traditional Cornas domaine run by the husband and wife team of Ludovic Izérable and Corinne Lionnet, the estate has been organic since 2007, and officially organic since 2012. Though not certified, biodynamic farming has been practiced here since 2017. The low intervention wines from this small artisanal estate are classically proportioned and distinctly graceful in style, and they continue to sneak under the radar of northern Rhône enthusiasts.

Affordable Burgundy from the Co-Owner of DRC: Domaine de Villaine

Domaine de Villaine was created when Aubert de Villaine, co-owner of the world-famous Domaine de la Romanee Conti, returned to Burgundy from the United States in the 1970s with his American wife. The estate is now run by Aubert’s nephew Pierre de Benoist with organic and biodynamic farming in the vineyards, and with the Mercurey and Rully reds fermented in wood tanks, a style adopted from DRC. Minimalist Wines Stars In The Dark 2019 - A Unicorn Wine in The Making

A one of a kind cool climate South African Syrah, the Minimalist Wines Stars In The Dark 2019 is the second vintage of this wine by rising star South African winemaker Sam Lambson. It has earned rave reviews from critics, with South African wine guide Platter’s awarding the 5-stars accolade to the wine , and most recently with Neal Martin, the Bordeaux and South Africa critic for Vinous Media, writing an effusive review and rating the wine 97 points, joint top with only two other reds amongst all South African reds ever reviewed by Neal Martin. Pricing remains reasonable for now despite the world-class quality, but with less than 1,400 bottles produced, and now that the secret is out, it will become increasingly elusive.

A Slice of History - Chateau Sisqueille Rivesaltes Vin Doux Naturel 1874

Chateau Sisqueille Rivesaltes Vin Doux Naturel 1874 HKD 5,000 per 37.5cl

The 1874 Rivesaltes from Château Sesqueille comes from a single barrel bottled by Philippe Gayral in January 2013 and it was, in fact, the debut vintage from Sesqueille (sic). It is a remarkable slice of history. The bouquet belies its age with wonderful Japanese plum and scents of sloe that gradually unfold in the glass and enrapture the senses. The palate is complex and sensual with red plum at its core, flanked by white pepper, fennel and aniseed aromas that are all exquisitely defined. The finish feels elegant and pure. No wonder Gayral felt compelled to bottle this. It is now quite difficult to find but bottles might crop up from time to time. Tasted with Philippe Gayral.

Score: 97

Neal Martin, Vinous.com, June 2018
