Minimalist Wines 2023 & 2024 Arrivals – Neal Martin Loves Them
Stars in the Dark 係向 Cape Agulhas 葡萄園嘅致敬。
No Place Like Home

Minimalist Wines is a South African winery we really like🇿🇦 — Neal Martin tasted them and now highly recommends chasing every vintage🤩. If you haven’t tried them yet, they’re well worth discovering.
Behind the label is Sam Lambson, a young winemaking talent who launched his project at just 21 after working harvests with respected Cape winemakers Lukas van Loggerenberg, Chris Alheit, and Carl van der Merwe (De Morgenzon). His philosophy is refreshingly honest: minimal intervention, exceptional grapes, and a real passion for cool-climate Syrah. The wines are aromatic, vibrant, precise, and full of character — elegant expressions that capture the best of South African terroir.💗
Stars in the Dark is a standout tribute to the wild, rugged vineyards of Cape Agulhas. Exposed to howling winds and harsh soils at Africa’s southernmost tip, the vines produce tiny, concentrated berries🍇 that deliver intense dark fruit, electric acidity, and remarkable finesse. “Some of the best things in life emerge from tough times and dark places”. True in wine, as in life, this message appears on the bottle’s back label to reflect the resilience of the Syrah vines that grow in the southern tip of Africa. Conditions are extreme on the harsh, exposed slopes of Cape Agulhas and, as always, we’re astonished and delighted by what nature delivers.
No Place Like Home captures the pure, refreshing elegance of Elgin Valley. In this cool pocket of the Capeinfluenced by maritime winds off the cold Atlantic Ocean just 10km away🌬️, these Syrah vines show surprising variation even within the same block. Sam explores this natural diversity by harvesting and fermenting each parcel separately, then meticulously blending only the best barrels to create a bright, energetic, and harmonious wine.
🥳We’re thrilled to announce the arrival of the 2023 and 2024 vintages of both cuvées.

New Vintages of Minimalist Wines
Minimalist Wines No Place Like Home 2023 - Bt | NM91
HK$280 ▷ HK$250
The 2023 No Place Like Home, Syrah from Elgin from four different soil types with 35% whole bunch. It has a beautifully defined nose with more mineral-driven black fruit with veins of cassis, becoming increasingly floral with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with impressive precision, a little more citrus-like style, bright and focused with a touch of graphite towards the sustained finish. Perhaps the best of Sam Lambson's '23s.

Minimalist Wines Stars in the Dark 2023 - Bt | NM92
HK$280 ▷ HK$250
The 2023 Stars In The Dark comes from parcels in Cape Agulhas. There is a stylistic connection with Barolo here, a touch of Japanese wakame that tinctures the mainly red fruit. The palate has fine acidity, quite saline (due to its coastal proximity), wonderful balance and symmetry with a precise, white pepper-tinged finish. Excellent.

Minimalist Wines No Place Like Home 2024 - Bt | NM94
HK$300 ▷ HK$270
The 2024 No Place Like Home comes from a Syrah parcel planted in 2006 that usually takes two and a half weeks or even longer to pick. Around 62% was aged in Lambson's newly installed 5,000-litre concrete vats, with around half the bunches whole cluster. This has a very pure and intense bouquet, with intense black fruit interlaced with pressed violet and peony. Stunning delineation. The palate is medium-bodied, with finely chiselled tannins, a silver bead of acidity, precise and mineral-led on the long finish. Outstanding

Minimalist Wines Stars in the Dark 2024 - Bt | NM95
HK$300 ▷ HK$270
The 2024 Stars In The Dark is aged around 40% in 5,000-litre unlined concrete vats, the rest in neutral oak. This has superb pure black cherry and blueberry fruit that blossoms in the glass, a little more concentration than the '23, as you would expect, wonderful delineation. The palate is framed by silky smooth tannins, but there is real depth to this wine. Garrigues and touches of bacon fat, very Rhône-like, this lingers long in the mouth. Sheer class.

Minimalist Wines Experimental Noir Grenache 2022 - Bt | JR17
HK$185
Pale, transparent red. Wow, this is spine-tinglingly pure! It tastes like rose petals and wild raspberries turned into silk and wrapped around tiny, mountain-stream-smooth pebbles. Pixels and petrichor. Playful at first, then very serious. The tannins are like the bark of the paper tree, smooth and pocked and rustling and super-fine and you want to rub your cheek against them. I LOVE THIS!

Minimalist Wines Experimental Blanc Sauvignon Blanc 2020 - Bt
HK$195
A splash of Semillon adds mid-palate weight and flesh. Partial malolactic fermentation and 6 months on gross lees bring texture and creaminess. Fermented in stainless steel. Pure, fruit-driven with vibrant acidity and lovely balance.

Minimalist Wines Connect the Dots 2021 - Bt | NM91
HK$245
The 2021 Connect the Dots is pure Syrah sourced from Elgin, Stellenbosch and Agulhas, 15 to 100% whole bunches depending on the parcel, matured in 225 and 300-liter used French oak. This is more reserved on the nose than its peers yet well-defined with dark berry fruit, white pepper and touches of potpourri. Very subtle. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, quite edgy on the entry, with very pure fruit and a slightly confit-like, peppery finish. This is a delightful Syrah from winemaker Sam Lambson.

Minimalist Wines Connect The Dots 2019 - Bt
HK$280
This vintage is 100% whole bunch fermented and was gently basket-pressed to older 300L French Oak barrels for 10 months, then matured in bottle for a further 12 months before release. The blend is made up of three almost equal parts, with the Helderberg lending red fruit and floras, underpinned by a grippy graphite, textured tannin, and the soils of the Elgin parcels displaying a more luxurious, plummy profile. There’s a lighter lavender and pepper from the shale, a darker, more savoury note from the sandstone and collectively, they showcase just how well Syrah thrives in South Africa’s cooler Cape climates.
Minimalist Wines Stars in the Dark 2022 - Bt | NM96
HK$310
The 2022 Stars in the Dark comes from Cape Agulhas, stomped underfoot with one-third whole bunches, aged in 3rd and 4th fill French oak. The red fruit on the nose seems to "hug" the olfactory senses, very pure and beautifully delineated, an underlying mineralité gaining momentum with aeration. The mediumbodied palate has fine-grained tannins, extremely well-balanced with a precise, edgy finish, black pepper and black tea lingering temptingly. This continues Lambson's strong run of form and comes highly recommended.

Minimalist Wines No Place Like Home 2022 - Bt | NM94
HK$310
The 2022 No Place Like Home is pure Syrah from Elgin containing 20% whole bunches, matured in used oak barrels. This is higher-toned and more opulent than the Stars In The Dark, with dark fruit but more floral in style. The medium-bodied palate has saturated tannins, very harmonious and poised, gently building in the mouth with veins of blue fruit towards the finish. There is a very seductive tenderness here. Sophisticated Syrah…but also delicious!

Minimalist Wines Stars in the Dark 2021 - Bt | NM94
HK$320
The 2021 Syrah Stars In The Dark comes from two parcels, one on clay and the other on Koffieklip soil, matured for 10 months in neutral 228 and 300-litre Ooak barrels. Winemaker Sam Lambson told me that he is seeking to express the rotundone element of the variety, essentially the "peppery" element. It certainly comes across here with lovely red berry fruit, white pepper, fennel and thyme. It's quite understated with a degree of transparency. That theme follows through on the palate that is beautifully balanced with fine tannins, elegant red fruit mixed with thyme and black olive, the latter imparting salinity that begs you back for another sip. Wonderful.

Minimalist Wines Stars in the Dark 2020 - Bt | Greg Sherwood MW 96
HK$330
A 100% pure Syrah red, the 2020 once again reveals a piercing black berry fruit aromatic profile that shares so much with the greatest Syrah examples from the Northern Rhone and Cote Rotie in particular. With the complex melange of black berry fruits come nuances of dried violets, potpourri and lavender together with dried herbs, garrigue, peppercorns and pithy cherry spice. The palate shows wonderful poise and precision, real intensity of fruit together with purity, minerality and telltale coastal salinity expressed with a kelpy, oyster shell reductive hint. Still tightly coiled and full of tension, this will be a fine Syrah to bury in the cellar for 5+ years but can be coaxed to display some of its finery with an hour or so in a decanter. A truly splendid wine that builds on the successes of the previous two drought affected vintages.
