🥰We are excited to welcome a fine selection of Etienne Sauzet 2014 Puligny-Montrachet Premier Crus.
Founded in 1903, this benchmark Puligny domaine is now led by Etienne’s great-granddaughter Emilie Boudot and her husband, winemaker Benoit Riffault. They farm biodynamically and focus on purity, finesse, and terroir expression. Benoit describes the excellent 2014 vintage in glowing terms:
“The 2014 vintage was not too difficult… The maturity was good with fine maturity of grapes with no rot. It is a balanced vintage with good fruit, a very Burgundian vintage in the spirit, no more and no less. It is my idea of a classic Burgundy💓.”
He explains the style further🙌:
“The 2012 were compact with dry extract, 2013 were very juicy but in a ‘cold’ way, very citric with good acidity. The 2014s are more classic in terms of the fruit; a little bit more yellow, but with the balance of 2013.”
In simple terms, these Etienne Sauzet 2014 Puligny-Montrachet wines offer beautiful ripe fruit (think yellow apple, pear🍐, and a touch of stone fruit), bright freshness, and that signature Puligny minerality.

(25% new oak): Musky, slightly reduced scents of lime blossom, lemon peel and quinine. Juicy on entry, then fat and pliant in the middle palate, showing a Meursault-like expressiveness to its flavors of lemon, nectarine, peach, talc and nutmeg. This fruit came in with plenty of tartaric acidity and its finished pH is a low 3.11, according to Riffault. Finishes quite dry but ripe and easygoing.

The 2014 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru les Champ Gain has a reserved and elegant bouquet, hints of citrus lemon and oyster shell reluctantly emerging in the glass, timid but gaining confidence with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with a little more exotic, by which I mean prettier with passion fruit and apricot, but still with fine mineralité. The acidity here drives this Puligny along with a twist of bitter lemon on the saline finish. This should give much pleasure over the next 10-15 years.

Very pale color. Slightly deeper-pitched than the Puligny villages, offering scents of peach and almond flower. Suave and fine-grained; a step up in concentration from the village wine, with more material and mineral presence to buffer its acidity. Finishes classically dry and persistent. This premier cru is firmly built but should nonetheless be accessible fairly early for its freshness and juicy minerality.

Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting, Sauzet's 2014 Puligny Montrachet 1Er Cru les Combettes has a crisp, lively, cold stone/limestone and grilled walnut-scented bouquet that lends it a Meursault-like personality. There is certainly impressive vigor in situ. The palate is very saline on the entry with fine acidity and very good depth—a quintessential Puligny-Montrachet that is lightly spiced and comes armed with an unsubtle but powerful finish that lingers.

The 2014 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru les Folatières is much more aloof on the nose compared to the nascent les Perrières, doesn't quite get out of second gear. The palate is fresh and vibrant with a keen thread of acidity and goes some way to make up for the sulkiness of the aromatics. Especially towards the finish, where it delivers Meursault-like hazelnut and walnut notes. Give this 3-4 years in bottle and it should rise phoenix-like.
