Chateau Lagrange 1986 - Bt | RP92

Here is a classic example of a wine that is showing significantly more complexity and richness from the bottle than out of cask, although it was certainly a potentially outstanding wine when tasted from the barrel. In a vintage that produced a number of enormously structured, rich, concentrated wines, Lagrange is another of the blockbuster wines that seems capable of lasting 30-35 years. Black/ruby in color, with a closed but burgeoning bouquet of spicy new oak, black fruits, and flowers, this muscular, full-bodied, tannic wine is packed with fruit and is clearly one of the great long-distance runners from this vintage. I admire how the significant investment made by the Japanese owners in this property has paid off with a thrilling, albeit amazingly backward, wine. The finest Lagrange to date! Anticipated maturity: Now-2025. Last tasted, 1/97.

Chateau Trotanoy 1993 - Bt | RP90

As a longtime fan of this property, I have been candid about my disappointment with most vintages of Trotanoy between 1983 and 1989. Certainly the 1990 appeared to be a return to the big, burly, concentrated style of Trotanoy produced in the forties, fifties, sixties, and early seventies. I am now convinced this property is on the rebound, as a result of sensational efforts in 1993, 1994, and the 1995, the latter wine the greatest Trotanoy since the 1970 and 1982. This is a wine to check out in the generally ignored 1993 vintage. Trotanoy's offering exhibits a saturated purple color, as well as a sweet, ripe nose of black-cherries, licorice, and earth. Top-class flavors, an opulent texture, medium to full body, moderate tannin, and an inner-core of sweet, jammy, concentrated fruit make this a terrific effort for the 1993 vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2001-2018. A sleeper!

Chateau Leoville Poyferre 1983 - Bt | RP91

One of the superstar 1983s that is not beginning to crack up and decline, Leoville-Poyferre’s effort exhibits a dark garnet color, a sweet nose of plum liqueur intermixed with licorice, black currants, weedy tobacco, and herbes de Provence. The wine is round, seductive, with a certain degree of opulence, low acidity, gorgeous fruit, and a nice layered palate impression. It makes for quite a seductive style of wine. Drink it over the next 7-8 years. Last tasted, 3/02.

Luciano Sandrone Barolo Cannubi Boschis 2000 - Bt | AG92

The 2000 Barolo Cannubi Boschis shows early signs of maturity in its autumn leaves, leather and spices. There is an attractive silkiness to the fruit, but ultimately the 2000 comes across as a bit two-dimensional, especially in context with some of the truly great vintages. The wine does freshen up a touch in the glass, not enough to make a material difference. Ideally the 2000 is best enjoyed over the next few years. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2018.
